Shooting Woes Doom Women's Hoops Against #1 OCU

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian University women's basketball team had their opportunities to hang with the NAIA #1 Oklahoma City University Stars on Saturday afternoon. MACU created open looks for themselves offensively all afternoon, but the Lady Evangels were unable to convert those chances into points, and as a result, the Stars pulled away late in the game.

MACU (5-3, 1-1 SAC) forced 21 OCU (7-2, 1-0 SAC) turnovers and grabbed 21 offensive rebounds in the game, but the Lady Evangels made only one 3-point field goal, and the Stars blocked nine shots, as OCU took the win 77-49.

Oklahoma City scored first, but MACU kept the game close. The Stars led by as many as eight in the first quarter, but MACU closed the gap, trailing by only five after 10 minutes of play. OCU quickly stretched the lead to 10 in the second quarter, but MACU kept the margin reasonable, trailing by 15 at the half, 43-28. The Stars inched their way to a 21-point lead midway through the third quarter, and as the quarter ended, MACU trailed by 18. Needing a big fourth quarter, MACU made only 2-of-17 fourth quarter field goal attempts, and OCU took the win 77-49.

Alexis Shannon picked up her second straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Jennah Coffman added 11 points including the Lady Evangels' only made 3-pointer, and MyKayla Flores had 10 points and five assists. MACU shot only 23.1% (18-for-78) from the floor in the game, and only 4.3% (1-for-23) from long range. At the foul line, MACU made 12-of-17 (70.6%) attempts.

MACU will go 12 days before getting back on the court for a game. The Lady Evangels will host the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lions (4-4, 1-1 SAC) on December 14 in their final Sooner Athletic Conference home game of 2017. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
