OKLAHOMA CITY – Miguel Vasquez was dominant on the mound in leading the Culver-Stockton College Wildcats to an 8-1 win over the Mid-America Christian University Evangels in the opener of a three-game series today (Feb. 24) at James Curtis Field.
Vasquez was perfect through the first four innings before giving up a leadoff double to Jerry McNew in the bottom of the fifth.
The Wildcats gave Vasquez all the run support he would need with a six-run third inning.
MACU broke the shutout when Aaron Conway singled in the sixth and later scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Colt Pickens.
The Wildcats quickly got that run back on a solo homer by Edward Madera in the top of the seventh.
Vasquez pitched a complete game, with only the one run allowed and nine strikeouts.
Madison Spencer started for the Evangels (5-10) and lasted 2 1/3 innings, giving up six runs, five earned with one strikeout.
Zach Carley came in after Spencer and pitched 4 2/13 effective innings in relief, giving up only the homer to Madera in the seventh. Carley struck out four and walked four.
Chevin Noone then threw the final two innings and allowed one run on two hits.
Madera drove in three runs overall and Jhonathan Mendoza went three-of-five at the plate for the Wildcats (4-5).
The two schools will conclude the series tomorrow (Feb. 25) with a twinbill starting at 1 pm.
