Baseball Evangels Split With SAGU to Win Weekend Series

Waxahachie, Texas – The Mid-America Christian University Baseball Evangels scored two in the seventh inning to defeat the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lions 4-2 in the first game of a twinbill today (Mar. 11) in Waxahachie, Texas.  The Lions then rallied for a 10-6 win in the second game to salvage a split. The win gives the Evangels the series win after winning 7-1 over the Lions last night (Mar. 10)

The opener was tied 2-2 heading into the seventh when Cameron Kirk drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Jake White.

Aaron Conway then came up and hit a go-ahead RBI double to plate Kirk and then scored an insurance run on a passed ball.

MACU starter Madison Spencer then came back out for the bottom of the seventh and worked around a leadoff double to preserve the victory.

The Evangels were down 2-0 but got on the board in the third on Kirk's first career home run.

An RBI fielder's choice by Jerry McNew later scored Colt Pickens to tie the score in the sixth.

Spencer allowed only two runs in his seven innings and blanked the Lions over the final five frames.

Josh Terry and Chris Wallace each had two hits for SAGU in the first game.

In the nightcap, the Evangels had jumped out to a 6-0 lead behind three RBIs from Axel Poesmans.

Poesmans drove in Pickens with a sacrifice fly in the first and then singled home both Conway and Pickens in the third.

Pedro Varela and Conway also each had an RBI single in a three-run third inning for the Evangels (10-16, 3-3 SAC).

But the Lions (10-16, 1-5 SAC) went to work and scored 10 unanswered runs, including a six-run sixth inning that put them on top.

The decisive sixth inning was capped by a two-run, ground-rule double by Griffin Glen.

Glen had three RBIs overall in the second game for the Lions, with Ethan Greiner and CJ Bills each driving in two runs.

Ben Donnell started for the Evangels and allowed four runs with two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings on the hill.

The Evangels will next be in action Tuesday evening (Mar. 14) at NCAA D-II member and former SAC rival Oklahoma Baptist University at 6 pm in Shawnee, Okla.
