OKLAHOMA CITY – The Texas Wesleyan University Rams used a five-run seventh inning to rally and defeat the Mid-America Christian University Evangels 10-7 in the second game of a doubleheader today (Mar. 4) at James Curtis Field. The Rams also won the opener 10-0 to sweep the two games and win the series.
The Evangels carried a 7-5 lead into the seventh but the Rams promptly loaded the bases with no outs.
Following a fielder's choice that scored a run, Aidan Laurini doubled home the tying run.
After an intentional walk again loaded the bases, Alex Gudac hit an RBI single for the go-ahead run.
Another fielder's choice and a throwing error resulted in two more runs for the Rams that made it a three-run game.
The Evangels threatened in the bottom of the seventh by bringing the tying run to the plate with runners on first and second and one out, but reliever Wade Regas got consecutive strikeouts to end the game and pick up the save.
Even in the loss, Jerry McNew was superb at the plate, going 4-of-4 with two RBIs.
McNew doubled home pinch runner Rhett Barber in the first and then had an RBI single that plated Kevin Lentzner in the third inning.
Aaron Davis also had two RBIs for the Evangels, while Axel Poesmans, Jacob Martinez and Aaron Conway each had two hits.
In the opening game, Alex Lopez delivered a dominant outing for the Rams (12-6, 2-1 SAC).
Lopez shut out the Evangels (8-14, 1-2 SAC) and didn't allow a hit until Pedro Varela hit a single with one out in the bottom of the sixth.
That's the only hit Lopez would surrender in seven innings and he also had four strikeouts.
Laurini drove in four runs for the Rams in the second game, including a bases-clearing three-run double in a four-run sixth inning that put it away.
Blake Seaton also hit a two-run homer to key a three-run third inning that snapped a scoreless tie and put the Rams on top.
The Evangels will next host Friends University (Kan.) Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 7) at 2 pm.
