Baseball Evangels Rally Past Arlington Baptist in Regular Season Finale

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian University Evangels rallied and then had to hang on for a 14-13 victory over the Arlington Baptist College Patriots in the regular season finale today (May 3) at James Curtis Field.

With the Patriots batting with runners on first and second with two outs in the ninth, Tyler Brown singled for his sixth hit of the day, but Ivan Rios was thrown out at third before Brandt Roush was able to cross the plate with the tying run.

The Evangels came back from 12-7 down with five runs in the fifth and then two go-ahead tallies in the sixth.

In the fifth, the Evangels got RBI doubles from Colt Pickens, Jerry McNew and Axel Poesmans before a pinch-hit single by Jacob Graham plated Cameron Kirk to put MACU on top. Pickens then grounded out to drive in Pedro Varela for an additional run.

MACU held an early 5-3 lead after two innings, but a three-run homer by Lyric Walker keyed a six-run third inning that put the Patriots in front.

McNew was three-for-four with three RBIs for the Evangels, while Moseley and Pickens also drove in three runs.

Kirk and Cameron Lentzner each had two hits for MACU and Aaron Davis singled home McNew for the Evangels' first run in the bottom of the first.

Brown led the Patriots' attack by going six-of-seven at the plate, with Gavin Munoz and Walker each producing three RBIs.

The Evangels used eight different pitches in what was setup as a bullpen start, highlighted by Brandon Johnson's two scoreless innings that earned him the win. Chayse Pittman then pitched the ninth inning and picked up the save.

Josh Stevenson also threw 1 2/3 scoreless frames and Reid Wall struck out the side to work around a bases-loaded jam to keep the Patriots scoreless in the seventh inning.

The Evangels will next compete as the fifth seed in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament, starting Friday afternoon (May 5) at 2:30 pm against fourth-seeded St. Gregory's University.  The game will be played at Jim Wade Stadium on the Oklahoma City University campus.
