OKLAHOMA CITY – The Sooner Athletic Conference announced the 2018 women's basketball All-Conference awards on Wednesday afternoon, and Mid-America Christian University had a pair of honorees on the list.
MACU's Alexis Shannon was named First Team All-SAC, and she earned Newcomer of the Year honors as well. Shannon was joined on the all-conference list by her teammate Chelseah Savage, who earned Honorable Mention All-SAC honors.
"It's great to see Lex honored by the league in a couple of ways," said MACU head coach Hannah Moeller. "She has worked very hard on her game and deserves any award that comes her way. What excites our staff is that Lex, as a sophomore, is only scratching the surface of how good she can be. Her future is very bright."
Shannon, a 5-10 forward from Noblesville, Indiana, was the go-to weapon in most situations for the Evangels this season. She ranked third in the SAC in scoring, averaging just over 18 points per game, and she shot the basketball at a 48-percent clip – a mark good for second in the SAC. She also ranked in the top-5 in the SAC in rebounds per game, pulling in nearly 7.7 boards per contest.
Savage had lower numbers, but her impact on the Lady Evangels' success was just as large in the way she led the team on the floor.
"Chelseah is a firey competitor and a great leader," Moeller stated. "We've leaned on her very heavily and she has responded as well as we could have ever asked. It was great to see the other coaches in the league recognize the huge part she played for us this year."
Savage averaged 8.8 points per game and she dished out 101 assists during the season.
