OKLAHOMA CITY – The 2018 season was an up and down year for the Mid-America Christian University baseball team, but the Evangels were well represented on the Sooner Athletic Conference All-Conference list.
Keisy Portorreal used an outstanding junior season to earn the SAC Pitcher of the Year honor, and he was one of three MACU players honored by the conference, along with Logan Gipson and Diego Pichardo who were included on the second team all-conference list.
Portorreal, a 6-0 right-hander from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, broke several MACU records during his junior campaign, as he set new program marks for wins (9), shutouts (4), and strikeouts (131). He led the SAC in strikeouts, finishing second in the NAIA in the regular season in total strikeouts. He posted a 9-3 record during the season with a 2.73 ERA and seven complete games in 15 starts. He held opponents to a .216 average in 95.2 innings of work, and he walked only 26 batters.
Gipson and Pichardo were each named second team All-SAC – Gipson as the designated hitter, and Pichardo as one of four outfielders. Gipson set a new MACU single season record with 21 doubles on the year, and he hit .316 with 25 RBIs during his senior season.
Pichardo missed 25 games due to injury, but when he was in the lineup, his impact was unmistakable. Pichardo hit .390 with five doubles, five homers, 27 RBIs and 38 runs scored. The junior also provided a steady presence in the outfield defensively.
Portorreal also made the NCCAA All-Region first team for the central region, along with his teammate Felix Martinez. Martinez, who was left off the All-SAC team despite stellar numbers, was named the first team all-region shortstop, hitting .402 in 49 games. Martinez tallied 47 runs and drove in 53 runs, as he set a new MACU single season mark with an impressive 129 total bases. Martinez belted 18 doubles and 11 homers. Pichardo was also named a second team all-region outfielder.
