OKLAHOMA CITY - Some nights, the shots just don't fall. Thursday night was one of those nights for the Mid-America Christian University men's basketball team.
MACU (12-7, 5-6 SAC) got open looks from long distance against NAIA #14 Wayland Baptist University (15-5, 10-2 SAC), but the Evangels were only able to make eight shots from beyond the arc, and the Pioneers won a low-scoring affair, 68-52.
Wayland Baptist opened the scoring 22 seconds into the game, and MACU's Zach Sawyer answered with a 3-pointer to tie the score, but WBU scored the next five points to take an 8-3 lead. MACU scrapped back to tie the game at 14, but WBU again surged in front, and the Pioneers led for the remainder of the half. Moments later, an 8-0 WBU run helped the Pioneers open a 33-19 lead, and while MACU did pull to within seven late in the half, a pair of free throws in the final seconds helped push WBU's lead to 37-28 at halftime. MACU never got closer than six in the final 20 minutes, and WBU stretched it out late on their way to the 68-52 win.
Anthony Black led the Evangels with 11 points, Justin Bogle grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, and Javan Perry had a pair of assists. The Evangels really struggled shooting the basketball in the game. MACU was 18-for-60 (30%) from the floor, and 8-of 36 (23.5%) from behind the arc. At the foul line, MACU was only 8-for 13 (61.5%) for the game.
