OKLAHOMA CITY - The Mid-America Christian University women's basketball team made history on Thurday night. In their 12th season in the NAIA, the Evangels had never beaten a top-10 opponent. That streak came to an end on Thursday night.
MACU (13-4, 7-4 SAC) controlled the game from opening tip to final horn, taking out the NAIA #5 WBU Flying Queens (17-3, 11-1 SAC) 85-66.
MACU opened the game on a 7-0 run in the first 1:31 of the game, but WBU slowly clawed their way level, tying the game at 9-9 on a bucket with 4:24 to play in the first quarter. WBU opened the second half on a 6-0 run, but they got no closer. Late in the third quarter, MACU put together an 8-0 run to turn a 5-point lead into a 13-point edge, and the lead remained at 10 heading into the fourth frame. In the final period, Nevada Denton and Alexis Shannon combined for the first six points in the period, and MACU quickly pushed their lead to 71-55. The lead continued to slowly grow in the final moments, as Wayland was unable to slow the MACU attack, and the Evangels took the commanding victory, 85-66.
