Gibson’s Game-Winner Propels Evangels To First SAC Victory

MCPHERSON, Kan. – Redshirt freshman forward Kyleigh Gibson led the Mid-America Christian women's soccer team to its first Sooner Athletic Conference victory of the season by scoring the game-winning goal in the 88th minute, propelling the Evangels to a 4-3 win over Central Christian on Saturday.

Gibson recorded her third multi-goal game of the season after scoring the Evangels' first goal of the match to go along with an assist on Liz Lozano's first half goal. Sylvie Willie pitched in the goal-scoring efforts with her second of the season as well.

Mid-America Christian (5-3-1, 1-1-1 SAC) jumped out in-front in the 10th minute when Gibson notched the first of her two goals on the afternoon.

At the 24:33 mark, the Evangels added to it when Gibson beat her defender down the right side and fired a cross to the left side of the goal box that found the foot of Lozano, knocking in her sixth goal of the 2019 season.

In the 38th minute, MACU stretched its lead to three when Willie was able to collect a loose ball in the goal box and fire a shot into the left side to extend the Evangels advantage to three.

With less than a minute left in the opening half, Central Christian (4-5, 0-2 SAC) was able to get their first score of the match when CCC's Alyssa Emery placed a shot into the right side, closing the MACU lead to 3-1 entering the break.

Despite giving up the late goal, MACU dominated the offensive possession in the period, outshooting Central Christian 12-3 including a 7-2 edge in shot on-goal.

The Lady Tigers rallied back in the second half, putting across goals in the 63rd and 68th minutes to lock the match up at 3-3.

With both teams getting limited opportunities in the second half, Gibson made a phenomenal individual effort in the 87th minute. The Moore, Okla. product was able to streak down the right side the right breaking into the middle of the goal box and beating three defenders before sliding the game-winning goal into the left corner of the net.

The Lady Tigers had one last chance at an equalizer off a corner kick with just five seconds remaining, but Jennifer Starwalt was able to get her mitts on Jordan Meier's header to allow the Evangels to come away with the victory.

Gibson and Lozano led the MACU offensive efforts with each taking five shots in the match. Lozano finished with four on-target shots while Gibson tallied three shots on-goal.

Mid-America Christian will be back in-action next week as the Evangels will host a pair of matches at Evangel Field. MACU will take on Bacone College in its final non-conference match of the season at 2 p.m. on Tuesday before facing Southwestern Assemblies of God at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
