OKLAHOMA CITY - The Mid-America Christian University baseball team has been competitive all season, but they Evangels have had a tough time finding a clutch base hit. On Thursday, it was more of the same for MACU, as the Evangels again were close but came up short.
MACU (4-9, 0-3 SAC) scored two early runs, but a mid-game lull from the offense and one big inning from Southwestern Christian University (17-6, 1-3 SAC) proved too much to overcome, as the Evangels fell at home to the Eagles 6-4.
Colin Minor hit a 1-out single to left field in the bottom of the second inning, and Edgar Martinez belted a double to put runners at second and third with one out in the frame. Yan Ely Adames grounded a single through the left side of the infield to give MACU the 1-0 lead. Leo Bejaran stole a base in the bottom of the third, and he came around to score on a throwing error to double the MACU lead, but SCU bounced back.
The Eagles plated a run in the top of the fourth frame, and in the sixth, SCU strung together five hits to plate five runs and take a 6-2 lead.
The score remained unchanged into the ninth, when Minor doubled to lead off the inning. Martinez singled him home and a base hit from Adames put runners at first and second with no one out. Junior Aracena doubled to centerfield to drive in Martinez and put the tying run in scoring position, but a pair of pop outs and a strikeout ended the game in a 6-4 SCU win.
Kyler Johnston (2-1) earned the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and three strikeouts. Ben Donnell (1-3) took the loss, yielding six runs on seven hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. Stephen Pagendarm (4) earned the save for SCU, allowing one hit in one inning with one strikeout.
The teams will complete their three game set at Dolese Park on Friday at 1 p.m. with a double-header.
