Men's Golf Fifth Heading into Final Round at SAC Championship

AMARILLO, Texas - The weather was less than ideal as the Sooner Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship teed off on Monday morning at La Paloma Golf Club. Temperatures were in the 50s with gusty winds and overcast skies, but despite the conditions, Mid-America Christian University's team competed hard and they are in the top five after 36 holes.

MACU fired an opening round 304, and while they dropped back slightly in the second round, they still sit at 612 with two of the three rounds in the books. MACU is only four strokes behind Southwestern Christian University, and they are tied with Central Christian College.

Isaac Maston shot an opening round 75 to pace the Evangels, and Gage Gibson was one shot behind him at 76 through the first 18 holes. Kaden Upton opened with a 76, and Wyatt Bonds shot 77 to round out the counting scored in the opening round, and Austin Davis carded an 81 as the fifth score for MACU.

Gibson proved to be a model of consistency in the second round, leading MACU with a 74. He had only three bogeys in the round, he birdied the third and 17th holes, and he parred 12 of the other 13 holes. Maston birdied four holes in a six hole stretch from the eighth to the 13th hole, and he finished with five birdies in the round on his way to a 76. Davis had one birdie in the round - on the eighth hole - on his way to a 77, Upton carded a pair of birdies and shot 81, and Bonds was one of three MACU players to birdie the eighth, and he shot 83.

Gibson is currently tied for 14th with 18 holes to play, as he posted a 36-hole total of 150. Maston is in 18th at 151, Upton is tied for 24th at 157, Davis is 26th at 168, and Bonds is tied for 27th with a total of 160.

The Championship will conclude on Tuesday with a single 18-hole round.
