Evangels Improve To 6-1 In SAC Action With Sweep Of Science & Arts

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian volleyball team continued its climb up the Sooner Athletic Conference standings on Friday night as the Evangels topped Science & Arts 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-19) for their third straight three-set sweep at the Gaulke Activity Center.

Mid-America Christian (8-4, 6-1 SAC) limited the Drovers to a zero attack percentage for the match while the Evangels were able to lay down a season-high 15 service aces, tying the fourth-most in a single match in program history in the victory.

Elena Hadzhieva led the Evangels attack from off the bench, tallying 12 kills on a .450 attack percentage while Hannah Focker recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs to go with a team and season-high five service aces.

Senior setter Alexa Bass finished with 33 assists, a season-high for a three-set match while Kaylie Walker led the Evangels backline with 13 digs.

After the two teams traded the first four points of the opening set, the Evangels were able to sprint out in-front with an 8-1 run thanks to a trio of Hadzhieva kills to grab the early 10-3 advantage.

Science & Arts (1-11, 1-7 SAC) closed the gap to as little as four, but MACU was able to overpower the Drovers during the midway point, outscoring USAO by a 12-5 margin to take its largest lead of the set at 22-11 before eventually closing out with the 25-15 win.

The Evangels were even more dominant in the second set, racking up six of the first seven points due in-part to three consecutive Focker service aces. The Drovers fought back to make it 8-4, but Mid-America Christian swung back with five unanswered with three of the five points coming from aces off the hand of Dianne Walter at the service line.

MACU dominated the remainder of the set, outhitting the Drovers by a .409 to .000 margin as 16 of the Evangels' 25 points came from either kills or the service line in the 25-11 set two win.

The third and final set was more tightly contested, but Mid-America Christian was able to rally from an early 3-1 deficit with an 8-2 run to claim a four-point lead. After the Evangels stretched their lead to 13-7, the Drovers stormed back with a 7-1 streak of their own to draw that set even at 14-all.

Focker reignited the Evangels attack as a kill and back-to-back service aces started an 8-3 run to bring the MACU lead back to five at 22-17. MACU limited the Drovers to just two more points the rest of the way while Focker tallied the match-winning kill in the 25-19 victory.

Walter finished the match with her second 10-plus point total of the season, racking up 11.5 points on four kills, four service aces and five total blocks.

With the victory, Mid-America Christian moved into a tie for second with John Brown in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings.

The Evangels will look to move into second place outright tomorrow as MACU will travel to Siloam Springs, Ark. to take on John Brown in a 3 p.m. match.
