GREENVILLE, S.C. – Coming off a record-breaking performance against Baptist Bible College (Mo.) last week, senior guard Lexi Hernandez was tabbed as the inaugural National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Division I Student-Athlete of the Week of the 2020-21 season, announced by the league office on Monday.

A 5-8 guard from Canyon, Texas, Hernandez nearly recorded a triple-double in the 116-31 victory over the Patriots on Oct. 28, scoring 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 2-for-5 from the three-point arc to go with 10 steals, eight assists and six rebounds.

The 10-steal effort shattered the program's NAIA era record for the most thefts in a single game as the previous record was held by seven different players, including: Shaylan Coleman, Jennah Coffman, Mykayla Flores, Felicia Foster, Adaugo Osuala, Karina Trindade and Melissa Aguilar. Hernandez was only two shy of matching the program's overall record of 12 set by Angela Wiley on Mar. 8, 1996.

Hernandez also finished with a career-high eight assists, which was the most by an Evangels player since Aaliyah Endsley dished out eight dimes, the team's 2019-20 season high at Texas Wesleyan on Jan. 16, 2020.

So far through two contests, Hernandez leads the NAIA in both steals (13) and free throw percentage (100 percent, 6-for-6). Hernandez is currently the team's second-leading scorer at 17.5 points per game as well as leads the squad with 11 assists.

Hernandez the sixth different Evangel in the last nine seasons to earn an NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week award, joining MACU greats Alexis Shannon, Sarai Rodriguez, Kelli Tolar, Ashlee Ferguson and Kourtni Williams on the list.

Mid-America Christian will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 5 as the Evangels will host one of the top teams in the country in No. 2 Wayland Baptist for a 6 p.m. tip-off inside the Gaulke Activity Center.
