OKLAHOMA CITY – After becoming the Mid-America Christian women's basketball team's second all-time leading scorer last week, senior forward Alexis Shannon was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Week by the conference office on Monday.
Shannon had an incredible week on the offensive end, averaging 28.5 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game as the Evangels split a pair of games at home against Oklahoma Panhandle State and No. 5 Wayland Baptist. The Noblesville, Ind. native shot a blistering 56.4 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from the free throw line while knocking down 80 percent of her free throw attempts.
In the 99-50 win against Oklahoma Panhandle State on Thursday, Shannon scored a career-high 33 points, surpassing MACU legend Christina Schmidt for second all-time in career scoring with 1658 points. Shannon matched Schmidt at the end of the third quarter as she was able to rattle in a three-pointer from the left wing just before the buzzer. The senior forward quickly surpassed it early on in the final period as she knocked in a tightly contested layup off a double team on a fastbreak layup with 9:15 to go.
In that win over the Aggies, Shannon made the fourth-most field goals in a single game in the NAIA era, going 14-for-21 from the field while the 33 points was the eighth-most in a single game since joining the Sooner Athletic Conference prior to the start of the 2007-08 season.
Despite suffering a 103-69 loss to No. 5 Wayland Baptist on Saturday, Shannon still put together a stellar offensive performance, scoring 24 points on 8-for-18 shooting and tied a season-high three triples, going 3-for-7 from behind the arc while draining 5-of-6 free throws.
After putting up the two great scoring games, Shannon is currently the leading scorer in the Sooner Athletic Conference with 470 points, the fourth-most in the NAIA while her 19.6 ppg scoring average ranks sixth nationally.
Mid-America Christian will look to get back on-track in Waxahachie, Texas on Thursday, Feb. 13 as the Evangels will tip-off at 6 p.m. against Southwestern Assemblies of God.
