OKLAHOMA CITY – After turning in a pair of stellar offensive performances last week, senior guard/forward Ashford Golden from the No. 2 Mid-America Christian men's basketball team was selected as the Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Week, announced by the conference office on Monday.
Between the wins over Oklahoma City and at Southwestern Christian, Golden averaged 27 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting at a 56.7 percent clip from the field, 53.3 percent from the three-point arc and 92.3 percent from the free throw line.
In the 99-92 win over the Stars at the Gaulke Activity Center on Feb. 20, Golden scored 37 points, just two away from his career-high while knocking down 11-for-18 from the field, 8-for-11 from beyond the arc and 7-for-7 from the foul line. Golden also ripped down eight rebounds and recorded a pair of steals to add to the outing. The eight triples Golden knocked down is the third-most made in a single game at MACU since joining the SAC in 2007, finishing only one behind Semar Farris and Olajuwon Gardner at the top of the list. Golden also broke into the top 10 in scoring for the second time this season, as his 37 points is the seventh-most in a single game during the same timeframe.
Golden followed it up with another solid offensive outing at Southwestern Christian on Saturday, Feb. 22. In the 94-89 victory, Golden scored 17 points on 6-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe while snagging seven rebounds and dishing out a pair of assists.
The scoring output against the Eagles has put the Oklahoma City native at 497 points for the 2019-20 campaign, surpassing Bryon Williams for the 10th most points scored in a single season during the NAIA era.
Golden and the rest of the MACU men's basketball team are preparing for their final regular season game inside the Gaulke Activity Center on Thursday, Feb. 27 as the Evangels will be hosting Central Christian for a 7:45 p.m. tip-off.
