GREENVILLE, S.C. – After nearly throwing a no-hitter against Bacone last week, junior starter Jaily Paredes was named the NCCAA Pitcher Student-Athlete of the Week by the league office on Tuesday.
The righty from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic threw 5.2 innings of no-hit ball against the Warriors in the 11-0 series finale on Saturday, but BC's Luke Risenhoover was able to squeeze a groundball through the right side of the infield for a base hit to break up the bid.
Despite loading the bases that inning, Paredes was able to get out of the jam by getting Adam Deatherage to strike out looking with two outs to record his career-best 10th strikeout of the game.
Overall, Paredes tossed six shutout innings, allowing just the single hit with two walks to go along with his 10 strikeouts to pick up his second win on the season on the mound.
Through the first 29 games, Paredes is the team's ERA leader at 1.16, allowing just three earned runs on 18 hits, seven walks and 26 strikeouts over 23.1 innings.
It is Paredes' second NCCAA weekly honor of the season after earning NCCAA Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week on Feb. 10. During the previous week, the Cecil College transfer batted .688 with nine runs and eight RBIs in a four-game sweep at Houston-Victoria.
Paredes is also the second MACU pitcher to receive the NCCAA Pitcher Student-Athlete of the Week award this season after junior starter Frensly Leito tossed seven no-hit innings, walking two and striking out 12 in the season-opener against Bethany (Kan.).
Mid-America Christian will be returning to Sooner Athletic Conference play this weekend as the Evangels will travel to Fort Worth, Texas to take on Texas Wesleyan in a three-game series. MACU will open the slate with a 2 p.m. game on Friday before returning to the field on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
