Lozano’s Record Day Leads MACU Women’s Soccer To Home Opening Win

OKLAHOMA CITY – Senior midfielder Liz Lozano continued to play at an incredibly high level for the Mid-America Christian women's soccer team as her 12-point performance on five goals and two assists set a new MACU program record to lead the Evangels to a dominant 10-1 victory over Texas A&M-Texarkana in the team's home-opener on Saturday.

SCORING SUMMARY
MATCH SUMMARY
  • Kelsey Henry fired in Mid-America Christian's (2-0) first goal at Evangel Field in 2020 when she picked off a Texas A&M-Texarkana (0-1) pass and launched a 30-plus yard shot that sailed over the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper into the top right corner to make it a 1-0 Evangels lead.
  • Liz Lozano started her goal-scoring spree inside the 29th minute as her goal extended MACU's lead to two before TAMUT scored with just over eight minutes left in the half to cut the MACU lead to 2-1 heading into the halftime break.
  • Lozano reached the hat trick milestone after tallying the first two goals of the second half. The Evangels scored three goals in less than five minutes when Kyleigh Gibson returning from injury notched her first goal of the 2020-21 season in the 55th minute to extend the MACU advantage to 5-1.
  • Veronica Lopez Cordero, Paola Camacho and Lozano rattled off three more MACU goals in a six-minute stretch midway through the second half to extend the lead to 8-1 with just over 10 minutes remaining.
  • Lozano tied the MACU goal scoring record when her shot from the right corner of the 18-yard box zipped past the keeper into the left corner of the net, bringing the score to 9-1 at the 86:03 mark.
  • Lopez Cordero slipped in her third goal of the season from point-blank with just under a minute remaining to close out the Evangels scoring.

MATCH NOTABLES
  • Liz Lozano became the third Evangels player in the NAIA era (2007-present) to score five goals in a game, tying Kaci Power's record-setting performance at Texas College on Sept. 15, 2015 as well as matching current MACU teammate Sylvie Willie, who pushed across five goals in MACU's win over Oklahoma Panhandle State at Community Christian School last season on Oct. 25, 2019.
  • By tallying two assists to go with her five goals in the contest, Lozano established a new single match points record with 12, surpassing Power and Willie's previous MACU records of 10 each.
  • With the result, MACU has scored 10 or more goals in its first two contests. It is the first time the team has accomplished the feat in the history of the program. The Evangels scored 12 goals in their season-opener in a 12-0 victory at Bacone (Okla.) back on Sept. 5.

UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will return to action on Oct. 8 as the Evangels will host Arizona Christian for a 1 p.m. match at Evangel Field.
