OKLAHOMA CITY – After finishing the 2020-21 regular season with a 9-1 record and a 6-0 mark in Sooner Athletic Conference play, the Mid-America Christian women's basketball team was named the SAC Co-Champion and earned the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament on Sunday night.
Mid-America Christian earned its first ever SAC championship since joining the league in 2007 was one of three teams in the SAC to finish undefeated against conference competition, joining nationally second-ranked Wayland Baptist (10-0 overall, 8-0 SAC) and No. 14 Oklahoma City (4-0, 3-0 SAC). The Evangels are sharing the conference crown with the Flying Queens.
The Evangels will host seventh-seeded Langston inside the Gaulke Activity Center at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and if they are victorious, the Evangels will host the winner of the No. 3 seed Science & Arts/No. 6 seed John Brown game inside the Gaulke Activity Center at 6 p.m. on Friday.
The Drovers locked up the third-seed after going 13-3 overall and 10-1 in league play with their lone loss coming to the Evangels by a score of 79-74 at the USAO Fieldhouse on Jan. 26, while the Stars rounded out the top four seeds.
The Evangels will enter the SAC tourney as the No. 1 scoring team in the NAIA, averaging 93.9 points per game while also ranking in the top three nationally in assists per game (20.3, third), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.47, third) and three-point field goal percentage (41.3, third).
After being off for two weeks due to COVID-19 canceling their games against Southwestern Christian and No. 14 Oklahoma City, the Evangels lit it up from the floor in their last games of the regular season, topping Langston 109-78 on Feb. 12 and following it up with a 109-51 drubbing of Central Christian during Senior Day on Feb. 13. The Evangels were scheduled to close out the regular season on Feb. 18 against Oklahoma Panhandle State and at No. 2 Wayland Baptist on Saturday, but the games were canceled due to the winter storm that impacted the southwest during the week.
MACU is hosting its fourth SAC Quarterfinal round in the last five years and if the Evangels are victorious, would host their first ever SAC Semifinal game after the structure of the tournament was changed this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Mid-America Christian is garnering its highest seed ever in the conference tourney, as they've never been higher than a four-seed in each of its previous 10 appearances.
Mid-America Christian was scheduled to be the site host for the SAC Semifinal and SAC Championship games, but due to the tournament structure change this year, MACU will host the conference tournament in 2022.
MACU will be allowing fans to attend the SAC Tournament games this week, but will need to adhere to the COVID-19 policies and procedures that are laid out in the link below.
