Three From MACU Men’s Basketball Earn NCCAA Scholar-Athlete Honors

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) announced its men's basketball Scholar-Athletes this week as Omar Boone, Dominick Ford and Toni Kumanovic each earned the honor for the 2020-21 season.

To be eligible for the NCCAA Scholar-Athlete list, a student-athlete must be a junior, senior or graduate student by academic standing, have completed at least one semester at the qualifying institution and maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.40 out of a 4.0 scale.

In his third season with the MACU men's basketball program, redshirt junior guard Toni Kumanovic has maintained a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade-point average while currently enrolled in an MBA program at Mid-America Christian after receiving his Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. Kumanovic competed in 14 games and made six starts during the 2020-21 season, averaging 4.5 ppg on 46.7 percent shooting and 43.8 percent from the three-point arc while also knocking down 87.5 percent from the foul line. Kumanovic also notched 18 assists while averaging 1.9 rebounds per contest. The 6-4 guard from Zagreb, Croatia scored a season-high 12 points in MACU's 67-63 comeback victory at Southwestern Christian on Jan. 25.

In his fifth season with the MACU men's basketball program, Ford will be graduating from MACU after recording a 3.47 GPA through the fall semester while majoring in Psychology. A 6-5 forward from McKinney, Texas, Ford was a three-year starter for the Evangels, appearing in 100 games, the eighth-most of any player to compete during the NAIA era (2007-present).

During MACU's 2019-20 campaign that saw the team finish with a 30-2 record, Ford turned in the most prolific three-point shooting season of any player in the NAIA era when he finished the year by knocking down 50-of-102 (49 percent) from behind the three-point arc.

Ford put together another solid season in 2020-21, closing out the year with a 7.8 ppg scoring average on a 37.7 percent shooting clip while pulling down 6.1 rpg and coming up with eight blocks and nine steals on the defensive end.

Rounding out the honorees, senior guard Omar Boone made a huge impact through the first half of the season with the Evangels. In the first seven games, the 5-10 guard from Oklahoma City averaged 15.0 ppg on a blistering 57.4 percent from the field, 51.6 percent from three and 86.4 percent from the charity stripe. At the time, Boone was leading the team with 29 assists, averaging 4.1 apg to go with 12 steals. Boone is currently a Biology major at MACU posting a 3.47 cumulative GPA.
