Long, Parsells Break Program Records In Sweep At Central Christian

MCPHERSON, Kan. – The Mid-America Christian softball team completed the series sweep over Central Christian on Sunday afternoon as the Evangels came away with an 11-3 in the opening game before coming away with a hard-fought 6-4 win in extra innings in the series finale.

In the opening game, senior pitcher Katie Long made history by surpassing Caitlyn Ulmer's 12-year-old record for the most strikeouts in a single season while sophomore outfielder Cailey Parsells nabbed a pair of stolen bases to become the program's single season stolen bases record holder.

  • Mid-America Christian finished with 11 runs on 14 hits with one error while Central Christian scratched across its three runs on seven hits and committed four errors.
  • By getting five strikeouts in four innings of work, Katie Long extended her season strikeout total to 137, surpassing Caitlyn Ulmer (135, 2009) for the most strikeouts in one season. By also getting her 14th win, Long tied teammate Regan Martin's 2018 mark for the third most victories by a pitcher in a single season in the NAIA era. Long went four innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
  • Cailey Parsells also made her mark in the top of the MACU single season record books in the same contest. By nabbing a pair of steals, Parsells also overtook Ribbin Dorado for the program's single season steals record.
  • Parsells was one of three MACU batters to record three hits, going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Kassie Martin slashed 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI while Faith Hollingsworth turned in a 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run.
  • Camenda Osborn scored a career-high three runs in the victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian pushed across its six runs on four hits with four errors while the Tigers tallied their four runs on nine hits with two errors.
  • Faith Hollingsworth came up with the biggest clutch hit of the series, smashing a two-run homer over the right field fence in the top of the eighth inning with two outs to allow the Evangels to come away with the 6-4 win.
  • Avery Schneringer continued to swing a hot-bat, going 2-for-2 with two walks, a triple and a run scored.
  • By getting the victory, the Evangels improved to 31-1 against the Tigers since joining the NAIA in 2008.
  • The Evangels completed their third Sooner Athletic Conference four-game series sweep of the season. MACU won four games at home against Oklahoma Panhandle State on Mar. 19-20 before getting a pair of doubleheader wins against Langston on Mar. 30 and Apr. 8.
  • Playing their final road games of the regular season, the Evangels went 11-5 away from Jack Allen Field during the 2021 campaign.

  • Mid-America Christian will open an eight-game home stand to close out the regular season with a doubleheader against Southwestern Christian on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at Jack Allen Field.
