Volleyball Takes Tri-Match with Wins Over Bethel, Sterling

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – The Mid-America Christian volleyball team got back to its winning ways on Wednesday night as the Evangels came away with a 3-1 win over host Bethel (Kan.) and a 3-0 victory over Sterling (Kan.) at the Bethel Tri-Match inside Thresher Gym.

    • Lena Stockhammer broke MACU's record for most assists in a four-set match with 51, which also goes down for a tie for the fifth-most assists in a match.
    • With 10 kills on an .818 attack percentage, Cloie Mitchell found herself near the top of the record books by tying the second-highest hitting percentage in a single match.
    • Hanna Foecker also notched the second-most kills in a single match with 28, placing behind the record mark of 30 that she set herself against College of the Ozarks on Sept. 3.

    • Set One
      • Mid-America Christian was able to score on five of the first seven rallies, but Sterling countered with a 5-1 run to capture an early 7-6 edge.
      • The two teams kept it close midway through the set before a Lena Stockhammer kill and back-to-back Hanna Foecker kills during a five-unanswered run gave MACU a comfortable 19-14 advantage.
      • After Sterling took three of the next five, the Evangels put the set away with three unanswered, capped off on a Kaylie Walker service ace to seal the 25-18 victory.
    • Set Two
      • Despite conceding the opening point, Mid-America Christian turned in five points in a row as Hanna Foecker was responsible for the last three points during the run with a pair of kills and an assisted block with Vanessa Moreira.
      • After the Warriors scored on two of the next three rallies, the Evangels went on one of their most dominant runs of the season, scoring 12 straight points to swell their lead to 18-3. Allison Porter led MACU during the run with three kills and a solo block, Foecker tallied two kills and Stockhammer served a pair of aces.
      • MACU didn't allow the lead to shrink to less than 12 the rest of the way as the Evangels closed out with three in a row off of kills from Stockhammer and Madayln Shurley along with a Foecker and Moreira assisted block to secure the 25-8 win.
    • Set Three
      • Mid-America Christian held a slim 4-3 lead before a Porter solo block jumpstarted a 5-0 run to stretch the advantage to 9-3.
      • Sterling scored three in a row on a strong counter and kept it close for the next 20 rallies as back-to-back kills from Iris Cavazos and Mia Prowell closed it back to 19-16.
      • A kill by Cloie Mitchell propelled MACU to a strong finish to the set, scoring six of the final nine points to end the match with a 25-19 set three win.
  • MATCH SUMMARY
    • Mid-America Christian performed well both in the attack and on the defense, recording 37 kills on a .297 attack percentage while limiting Sterling to only 26 kills on a .027 percentage. MACU was especially dominant in set two, limiting the Warriors to only four kills on a -.129 attack percentage.
    • Hanna Foecker had a strong match with a double-double, turning in 14 kills on a .324 attack percentage to go with 10 digs and three blocks.
    • Allison Porter was stellar at the net, slamming down six kills on a blazing .667 attack percentage while also notching two solo blocks and two assisted blocks.
    • Lena Stockhammer led the passing efforts with 27 assists to go with four kills while Maegan Plunk guided the backline defense with 13 digs.
    • Mid-America Christian notched its first win in the NAIA era against Sterling. MACU's last win against the Warriors came all the way back on Sept. 17, 2005 when the Evangels were still competing at the NCCAA Division II level.
    • With an 11-4 overall record, the Evangels are off to their best start through 15 matches since joining the NAIA in 2007.

  • Mid-America Christian will return to Sooner Athletic Conference play on Friday as the Evangels will head down to Fort Worth, Texas to take on Texas Wesleyan. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. first serve.
