Softball Starts Season with 4-1, 7-4 Sweep of Kansas Wesleyan

OKLAHOMA CITY – Coming off the program's first ever NCCAA National Championship win, the Mid-America Christian softball team accomplished another first in its 2022 season opener as the Evangels defeated Kansas Wesleyan in for the first time in program history in a pair of 4-1 and 7-4 victories at Jack Allen Field on Friday.

TOP PERFORMERS GAME SUMMARY
  • Mid-America Christian put together the first scoring situation of the game when Mikaylee Allen reached on an infield single to third and made it all the way to third on a Katlyn Acosta throwing error with one out, but she was left stranded as KWU's Carmen Angulo induced two quick outs to get out of the jam.
  • Kansas Wesleyan's first scoring chance came in the second after Elizabeth Willison and Jocelyn Alcala reached on back-to-back singles to start the inning, but Rachel Eggleston got out of the jam with three straight outs on a fielder's choice interference call on Willison heading to third, a flying and ended it with a strikeout.
  • The Evangels finally cashed in the bottom of the fourth. After two outs to start the frame, Camenda Osborn smashed a double to center before Aurelia Holguin smacked an RBI single up the middle to score Osborn and make it a 1-0 MACU lead.
  • MACU added some much needed insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. After utilizing some small ball to get runners to second and third with one out, Osborn came up with her second double of the day by smashing a shot down the left field line to score Karlee Danielson and Allene Dennis to stretch the advantage to 3-0.
  • The Evangels were able to add two it two batters later when Acosta committed another fielding error and then a throwing error trying to get Rachel Humburg at first, allowing pinch-runner Grace Yoesting to score from second and make it a 4-0 game.
  • The Coyotes were finally able to come across in the seventh. After Adrienne Phillips came in for Eggleston in relief and inducing a foul out to first to start things off, Angulo followed with a single and then scored from first when pinch-hitter Mia Hernandez crushed a double to the right-center field fence, cutting the Evangels' edge to 4-1.
  • After giving up a walk on the next batter, Phillips was able to abruptly end the game by inducing double play popout to Allen at short. As MACU tried to catch the runner at first returning to the base, Hernandez got caught at second. The back-up catcher got caught when Roberts relay back to Allen got away into outfield, but Kassie Martin was well-placed backing up the play as she still caught Hernandez trying to return to second for the final out.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its four runs on six hits and committed one error while Kansas Wesleyan pushed across its one run on five hits and made three defensive miscues.
  • In making her return from injury, redshirt freshman starter Rachel Eggleston dazzled in the circle, throwing six scoreless innings and allowing only three hits and two walks while striking out a career-high seven batters.
  • Coming off a stellar performance in the NCCAA National Championship, senior catcher Camenda Osborn led the way from the plate once again by going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and scored a run. Sophomore designed player Aurelia Holguin drove in MACU's lone other RBI with a single in the sixth.
  • The Evangels picked up their first ever win over Kansas Wesleyan after the Coyotes had taken the first 14 games in the series since the two programs started playing each other in 2011. However, the two teams have only played once in the last five seasons as KWU last defeated MACU 4-1 at Langston's home tournament in Stillwater, Okla. on Mar. 6, 2020.

TOP PERFORMERS GAME SUMMARY
  • Mid-America Christian scored early and often in a six-run first inning. After Cailey Parsells drew a walk and stole both second and third, she came around for the first score of the game on an RBI single to right by Mikaylee Allen to make it a 1-0 game.
  • After Allen stole a bag of her own and Kassie Martin reached on a fielder's choice, the Evangels added two more when Olivia Roberts drove an RBI single to right and Martin came around to score when KWU right fielder Paola Cordova made an errant throw trying to nab Martin advancing to third, bringing to a 3-0 Evangels lead.
  • Following a Larman walk and an Osborn SAC bunt to put runners at second and third, Roberts reached home on Natalie Zamora's wild pitch before Larman reached home on an Adyson Bradley single to right, setting the score to 5-0.
  • The Evangels wrapped up the big scoring inning on Parsells RBI single to shallow right-center, plating Bradley and making it a 6-0 lead.
  • Kansas Wesleyan immediately got two back in the top of the second when three of the first four batters reached on singles to load the bases before Miranda Guerrero drove a single to left, trimming the Evangels' edge to 6-2.
  • The Coyotes threatened again in the top of the third with the two lead hitters each reaching on singles, but MACU starter Avery Schneringer was able buckle down by recording three straight outs to escape the jam.
  • KWU was able to get two more back in the top of the fourth when the team's two lead runners once again reached on back-to-back singles for the third straight inning. Adrienne Phillips once again came in relief and was able to get a strikeout and a flyout to start, but following a walk, the Yotes scored two on a two-RBI single by Vivian Millan, trimming the MACU advantage to 6-4.
  • However, the Evangels were able to get out of the inning on the very same play when Millan made the mistake of advancing to second on the throw home, forcing KWU's Mia Hernandez to try and reach third, but the MACU was able to tag her out sliding into the bag.
  • After being held scoreless for three straight innings, the Evangels were able to add an insurance run in the fifth. Following an Osborn single and advancement on a wild pitch a Rachel Humburg single to put runners at the corners and a pinch-runner Kenzee Danielson steal to put two in scoring position, Bradley perfectly executed a safety squeeze to score Osborn from third, stretching it back to a 7-4 advantage.
  • Kansas Wesleyan was never able to threaten the Evangels lead the rest of the way as MACU held on for the 7-4 victory.
GAME NOTES
  • The Evangels notched their seven runs on nine hits and committed no errors while Kansas Wesleyan pushed across its four runs on 11 hits and tallied two errors.
  • After a rocky appearance in game one, Adrienne Phillips had a stellar showing in the second game in getting the win, allowing no runs on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts over four innings of relief.
  • Adyson Bradley led the MACU bats with a pair of RBIs, going 1-for-2 with a single and run scored to go with a SAC bunt.
  • Mikaylee Allen and Olivia Roberts each finished with a pair of hits with both players going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Roberts notched the lone extra base hit of the game with a double while Allen tallied a stolen base.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will play its first road games of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 16 as the Evangels will travel to Winfield, Kan. for a doubleheader against Southwestern.
