Softball Picks Up First NAIA Top 25 Win, Splits On First Day of Red Dirt Classic

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian softball team notched its first win against an NAIA Top 25 team of the season at the Red Dirt Classic on Friday as the Evangels topped No. 7 Ottawa (Kan.) 7-1 before falling to Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods 4-1.

PITCHING DECISION SCORING SUMMARY TOP PERFORMERS GAME SUMMARY
  • After having an opportunity stamped out on a double play in the first inning, Mid-America Christian was able to push across the first score in the second. With one out, Janessa Larman cranked a solo homer over the left field fence to make it a 1-0 MACU lead. The Evangels added one more later in the frame when Camenda Osborn reached on an error by the first baseman catching the relay before Rachel Humburg smashed a triple down the right field line, bringing the score to 2-0.
  • The Evangels added two more in the third. Following Cailey Parsells hitting a leadoff single and stealing second, Mikaylee Allen drove her home with a single to center. Allen came around to score later in the inning after stealing second and advancing to third to third on SAC bunt. With Roberts batting, MACU tried to replicate the walk-off play from the NCCAA Championship by laying down a suicide squeeze, but Roberts missed the bunt and the catcher misplayed the pitch while Allen scurried home to make it a 4-0 game.
  • MACU added an insurance run in the fourth as Megan Widener hit a SAC fly into foul territory in left field, plating Camenda Osborn from third and making it a five-run read.
  • The Braves started putting together a major threat in the bottom of the fourth after Allison Kearney reached on an error and Jillian Kygar drew a walk to lead off the inning, however, MACU starter Rachel Eggleston was able to limit the damage to just one run on an RBI single by Ottawa starting pitcher Kelsie Kippes.
  • The Evangels threatened to add to it in the top of the sixth as Osborn and Kenzee Danielson reached second and third with one out, but Kippes was able to get Karlee Danielson and Widener to ground out in back-to-back at-bats to keep the score to 5-1.
  • Mid-America Christian put two runs across in the seventh on back-to-back singles by Martin and and Roberts to cap the scoring at 7-1.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its seven runs on 10 hits and committed two errors while Ottawa scored its lone run on five hits and also made two miscues.
  • Rachel Eggleston earned the win to improve to 5-2 on the season, allowing just one unearned run on three hits, two walks and two strikeouts over four innings of work. Adrienne Phillips earned her second save of the year after allowing only two hits and struck out two over three shutout innings.
  • The Evangels had balanced bats across the board with six different players recording an RBI.
  • Rachel Humburg led the Evangels with three hits, going 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
  • Mikaylee Allen once again provided a spark with the bat and on the basepaths, slashing 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored to go with three stolen bags.
  • Janessa Larman notched MACU's second home run of the season on her solo blast to left. Larman tallied a pair of extra-base hits by swatting 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run off her second-inning jack.
  • Mid-America Christian notched its first win against a team ranked in the NAIA Top 25 since topping No. 3 Science & Arts 4-2 at Allen Field on Apr. 10, 2021.

  • The Evangels put together a solid scoring chance in the top of the second by putting runners at second and third with one out, but Kenzee Danielson got picked off at third before Rachel Humburg lined out to first to wrap-up the inning.
  • The Pomeroys blew the game wide open in the bottom of the second, pushing across four runs on five hits and a pair of errors.
  • Mid-America Christian's only score of the contest came in the top of the sixth after Cailey Parsells ripped a leadoff triple to right-center before Emylee Campbell drove her in on an RBI groundout to third to make it a 4-1 game.
GAME NOTES
  • Saint Mary scored its four runs on 11 hits and made one error while the Evangels notched their lone run on three hits and committed a season-high three errors.
  • Cailey Parsells was the lone Evangel to tally more than one hit, batting 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.
  • Avery Schneringer suffered the loss after throwing five innings and fiving up four runs, two earned on 11 hits with one walk and a strikeout.
  • The Evangels were defeated in their first ever meeting against Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods.
