OKLAHOMA CITY – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced its NCAA and NAIA Baseball Academic All-District Teams on Thursday as three members of the Mid-America Christian baseball team were named to the esteemed list.
Graduate catcher Yan Ely Adames, junior outfielder Andrew Enwiya and freshman outfielder Isaiah Leon were all named to the 12-member team in NAIA District 4, making them eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors that will be announced in June.
Those selected to the Academic All-District are voted upon by members of CoSIDA and are considered based off the student-athlete's on-field and in-classroom performance.
Enwiya was named to the list after putting up unprecedented hitting numbers for the Evangels during the regular season. The Modesto, Calif. native leads the team in batting average (.424), hits (61), home runs (13), runs-batted-in (47), on-base percentage (.514) and slugging percentage (.819) while also ripping 12 doubles, three triples and has scored 39 runs.
Currently, Enwiya needs just one more dinger to match Adrian Bravo-Carmona's NAIA Era (2008-present) single-season home run record and is currently boasting the highest batting average along with the second-highest slugging and on-base percentages as well as the third-most total bases (118), just 11 away from Felix Martinez's single-season mark set in 2018.
Enwiya is an Interdisciplinary Studies major at MACU and is boasting a 3.43 cumulative grade-point average.
In his first season with the Evangels, Leon has also been a big time producer from the lead-off position. The Simi Valley, Calif. product is entering postseason play with the team's second-highest batting average (.391), on-base percentage (.510) and slugging percentage (.647) while already shattering the program's single-season runs record (60) and tying the single-season triples record with Nathan Milton (4, 2009). Leon has also provided a powerful bat in the MACU lineup, bashing 11 doubles and seven home runs to go with 27 RBIs and a team-best 12 stolen bases.
Even with all of his on-field success, Leon has been even more successful in the classroom as he holds a 4.00 GPA while majoring in Business and Ethics, being one of only two players named to the All-District Team with an unblemished GPA.
Rounding out the honorees, Adames has put up a career for the ages at MACU. The program's NAIA Era career hits, doubles, RBIs and total bases leader has put up yet another unbelievable season in his final year with the program, batting the third-highest average (.359) while leading the team in doubles (16) and RBIs (47) to go with the fourth-highest slugging clip (.557) with a triple and five home runs to his docket with 21 runs and seven stolen bases.
Earlier this season, Adames broke the program's single-game hits record by slashing 6-for-7 in a 23-21 defeat at Southern Nazarene (Okla.) on Apr. 12.
Adames has been a staple student-athlete, recording a 3.84 GPA while pursuing his Master's of Business Administration degree.
Mid-America Christian is currently preparing for postseason play as the Evangels will be competing at the NCCAA World Series being played at the Kansas City Royals Urban Youth Academy in Kansas City, Mo. from May 20-24.
