GREENVILLE, S.C. – The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) announced its 2022 baseball All-American recipients on Friday and after putting together one of the best seasons in program history, the Mid-America Christian baseball team had two selected to the esteemed list.
Senior starting pitcher Frensly Leito was tabbed as a Second Team selection while junior outfielder Andrew Enwiya collected a Third Team All-America nod.
In his third season with the program, Leito put together an astounding season from the mound, finishing the year with a 5-3 record and a 2.48 earned run average to go with a team-best 98 strikeouts while issuing only 30 walks.
The 6-4 Wilhelmstead, Curacao native was a nightmare to hit against as Leito limited the opposition to just a .185 batting average and turned in a 1.13 WHIP in 65.1 innings of work.
The four-time NCCAA Pitcher of the Week put up some incredible performances in the first half of the season. In a 13-0 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Mar. 4, Leito tied Keisy Portorreal's single-game strikeout record with 17 while allowing only three hits in a complete-game shutout.
On Feb. 12, Leito also put up another top five single-game strikeout mark with 15 punch-outs in seven innings of work in a 3-1 victory at Our Lady of the Lake.
Despite missing some action due to a late season injury, Leito still put together a historic season as his .185 OBA is the third-lowest in the NAIA Era while his 2.48 ERA ranks as the sixth-lowest and his 98 strikeouts ranks as the fourth-best single-year mark.
Overall, Leito wrapped up his career with the program's lowest ERA at 2.09 (minimum 40 innings pitched) and tallied the second-most strikeouts with 179, sitting only behind David Wynn (189, 2010-11).
Over the course of his three seasons at MACU, Leito also allowed only 39 runs and 28 earned runs, ranking as the fifth-fewest of any Evangels pitcher to throw at least 40 innings and the fewest allowed by any MACU pitcher to loss more than 100 innings (120.1 IP). His three career shutouts also rank as the second-most of any MACU pitcher, sitting only behind Portorreal (5, 2018-20).
In his first season with the MACU baseball program, Enwiya put up incredible hitting numbers that hadn't been seen in over a decade.
The Modesto, Calif. product wrapped up the year with several NAIA Era top five single-season marks, including: batting average (.429, 2nd), slugging percentage (.787, 2nd), on-base percentage (.519, 3rd), home runs (13, 2nd), runs-batted-in (50, 5th) and total bases (122, 2nd).
The 6-1 left fielder also set some single-game marks, tying the single-game home runs mark with a pair of jacks in a 12-8 win at Southwestern Christian on Mar. 18 as well as the single-game walks mark with four drawn in a 17-10 win over Carolina at the NCCAA World Series on May 21.
Enwiya recorded multiple clutch hits over the course of the season, which included hitting the go-ahead grand slam in the top of the ninth in that win over the Eagles on Mar. 18, the walk-off RBI single in an 8-7 win over Dallas Christian on Mar. 15, the go-ahead solo homer in the top of the seventh in a 4-3 win at Wayland Baptist on Mar. 12.
The biggest of Enwiya's clutch hits came in a 3-2 victory over No. 5 Oklahoma City as he crushed a walk-off solo blast to left in the bottom of the ninth.
It was the first time MACU had a pair of NCCAA All-Americans since the 2018 season, when Portorreal and Felix Martinez each garnered a Second Team nod.
Overall, Mid-America Christian put together one of its winningest seasons in program history, finishing the year with a 32-22 mark and appeared in the program's first ever NCCAA World Series, marking the first time the Evangels competed in national championship postseason play since winning the 2004 NCCAA Division II National Invitational.
