Men’s Basketball Struggles to Slow Down Red-Hot Wayland Baptist, 103-77

OKLAHOMA CITY – The MACU men's basketball team was unable to overcome the hot shooting night from Wayland Baptist as the Evangels fell 103-77 inside the Gaulke Activity Center on Thursday night.
 
TOP PERFORMERS GAME SUMMARY
  • First Half
    • After Tedrick Wolfe and Eylan Goodwyn traded layups on back-to-back possessions, Wayland Baptist (14-6, 3-5 SAC) put together an 15-6 run as a Josh Servantez three from the right wing pushed the Pioneers lead out to 17-8 with 12:31 left.
    • Mid-America Christian (8-13, 5-10 SAC) began to claw its way back behind Quentin Woodson's second-chance score along with a pair of threes from Jonathan Alexandre and Trevonte Doolittle during an 8-2 surge closed it to a three-point game at 19-16 with just under 11 minutes to go.
    • Wayland Baptist maintained its lead over the next four minutes, but the Evangels knotted the game-up at 27-27 on a Jaylon Barnett layup with just over seven minutes left before burying a pair of free throws with 6:35 to play.
    • The Pioneers caught fire from the three-point arc over the final six minutes as Wayland Baptist went 5-for-7 from range the rest of the way while outscoring MACU 20-9 during the stretch to take a commanding 47-36 advantage into the halftime break.
 
  • Second Half
    • Dylan McDougal wasted no time getting going for the Pioneers coming out and knocking down two three-pointers from the right wing to swell the Wayland Baptist edge to 53-36 with just under 19 minutes to go.
    • Seth Hurd gave MACU some momentum by scoring nine of the next 14 Evangel points over the next six minutes. A pair of hoop-and-harms from Herd and DaRaun Clark wrapped up a 14-7 run to close the gap to 60-50 with 13:22 remaining.
    • Wayland Baptist scored nine of the next 11, extending its lead back to 17 on a D'Michael Bellfield three-point play, but MACU swung back with five straight as Hurd powered in a right-handed layup to bring it back to 69-57 with just under 11 minutes left.
    • The WBU defense frustrated the Evangels over the next five minutes as MACU was held to just one field goal over the next five minutes as the Pioneers strung together an 18-6 run with Parrish Hewitt's three with 6:13 remaining giving Wayland Baptist an insurmountable 87-63 advantage.
    • The Evangels put together one last run, scoring nine of the next 11 as a Conner Calavan three and a Tarrence Gaines fastbreak layup off a Barnett steal trimmed the deficit to 89-72 at the 4:19 mark.
    • Wayland Baptist allowed the Evangels to climb no closer as the Pioneers closed out the game by scoring 14 of the last 19 points to wrap-up the 103-77 final.
GAME NOTES
  • Wayland Baptist was lights-out shooting the rock as the Pioneers went 33-for-65 (50.8 percent) from the field, 13-of-30 (43.3 percent) from deep and finished 24-of-34 (70.6 percent) from the foul line.
  • Mid-America Christian couldn't quite keep up with the Pioneer shooting, but still shot a respectable 24-of-55 (43.6 percent) from the field and 5-for-16 (31.3 percent) from three-point range. However, the Evangels were able to outshoot WBU from the free throw line by going 24-of-28 (85.7 percent).
  • The Pioneers were able to take advantage of MACU's miscues as WBU outscored the Evangels 28-6 on points off turnovers while Wayland also took excellent care of the basketball, finishing with a season-low five turnovers while dishing out 21 dimes.
  • Offensive rebounds also played a large role in the Pioneers victory as they outrebounded the Evangels 15-7 on the offensive glass leading to 15 second-chance points.
  • Seth Hurd led the MACU offensive efforts with a team-high 17 points on an efficient 8-of-10 shooting from the field.
  • Tarrence Gaines poured in 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting and 5-for-7 from the charity stripe to go with five rebounds to go along with a game-high three assists while Quentin Woodson rounded out the double-figure scorers coming off the bench with 10 points, shooting 3-of-5 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line in the 15 minutes of action.
  • Mid-America Christian was never able to take the lead from Wayland Baptist as the Pioneers swept the season series and won its fourth consecutive meeting between the two programs.
