Baseball Opens Home-Opening Slate with Doubleheader Sweep over Iowa Wesleyan

OKLAHOMA CITY – The MACU baseball team put together a successful showing in its home-opening doubleheader on Friday as the Evangels picked up a 4-3, 6-2 sweep over Iowa Wesleyan at the MACU Baseball Field.

GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its four runs on eight hits while Iowa Wesleyan tallied three runs on three hits and committed three errors.
  • MACU starting third baseman gave MACU the early momentum when he sent a three-run rocket over the center field wall to make it a 3-0 game in the bottom of the first. Overall, Fuecker led the MACU bats by going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a run and a pair of singles.
  • Noel McGarry-Doyle notched the only other RBI for the Evangels on a groundout that scored Jacob Police from third. Overall, McGarry-Doyle slashed 1-for-3.
  • Zane Robeaux got off to a rocky start when he gave up three runs over the first three innings on a Philip Guerrero RBI single and a Julian Figueroa two-run jack to left. However, the junior righty settled down after giving up the homer, sitting down 11 straight batters, seven of which coming via the strikeout.
  • Overall, Robeaux put together one of his finer outings as he picked up his fourth straight win to open the season. The Mustang, Okla. product tossed six innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits and three walks. By tallying a season-high 10 strikeouts, Robeaux notched his second double-digit strikeout game as a member of the Evangels in his two-year MACU career.
  • Kelton Lachelt came in the seventh and recorded his second save of the season, sitting down the Tigers in-order on a pair of flyouts and a strikeout.
  • The game marked the first ever meeting between Mid-America Christian and Iowa Wesleyan.

GAME NOTES
  • The Evangels plated their six runs on 11 hits and made one miscue while the Tigers scored two runs on seven hits.
  • After giving up two early runs on three hits in the first inning, MACU starter Ryan Harney settled down the rest of the way, allowing just four more hits over six innings to go with a pair of walks and five strikeouts. As a result, Harney moved to 3-0 on the mound this season while notching his second complete game.
  • Mid-America Christian pushed across four of its six runs in the fifth inning as MACU had five players reach on four hits and a walk. The Evangels also tallied three doubles in the frame off the bats of Jacob Police, Yan Ely Adames and Andrew Enwiya.
  • By getting the win, the Evangels are currently off to their best start through 13 games in program history. MACU had only won 10 of its first 12 on one other occasion, that coming in 2020, but the Evangels suffered a tough 12-11 defeat at Friends (Kan.) on Feb. 18 to snap the streak.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will look to win the series tomorrow as the Evangels will wrap-up the four-game slate with Iowa Wesleyan with a noon doubleheader.
