Strong Bats and Pitching Carry Baseball to 7-2, 7-0 Sweep over Houston-Victoria

VICTORIA, Texas – The MACU baseball team got two more stellar starts from Zane Robeaux and Ryan Harney while the bats powered the Evangels to 7-2 and 7-0 victories over Houston-Victoria to open a four-game series at Riverside Park on Friday afternoon.

PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its seven runs on 11 hits and committed one error while Houston-Victoria scored its two runs on six hits and made four miscues.
  • The Evangels as a team batted .355 (11-for-31) while holding the Jaguars to just a .259 (7-for-27) hitting clip.
  • With his home run in the first, Yan Ely Adames was the first Evangels player in the 2023 season to go yard. Adames has now surpassed MACU great Felix Martinez for third in the program's NAIA Era record book for career homers with 23 in his fourth season with the squad.
  • MACU's leadoff hitter Tylor Richey created several problems for the Jaguars on the basepaths. After reaching base with a pair of singles and walk, Richey notched a pair of runs, including on on the Evangels' first double-steal of second and home on the season.
  • MACU starter Zane Robeaux twirled another gem on the mound in getting his second straight win to start the season. Robeaux allowed just two earned runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts over six innings of work. With his ninth win, the junior righty from Mustang, Okla. now joins Christian Hill and former teammate Frensly Leito for the fifth-most victories by a pitcher in the NAIA Era.
  • Junior reliever Chase Zienin made his first appearance of the season in the seventh, allowing two hits, but left them stranded with a strikeout to complete the scoreless frame.
  • It is the second time that the Evangels opened a four-game series with Houston-Victoria with a win. The last time the two teams faced off back on Feb. 7, 2020, MACU scored 11 runs over the final three innings to run away with a 15-9 victory at Riverside Park.

PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • The Evangels scored their seven runs on 10 hits while the Jaguars were limited to two hits and committed one error.
  • For the third straight game, MACU batted .300 or better as a team after going 10-for-30 (.333) while defense held UHV to only an .087 batting average.
  • Ryan Harney twirled MACU's first complete-game shutout victory of the season, allowing only two hits and two walks with two strikeouts over seven innings of work.
  • Carlos Medina was a big time run producer hitting out of the nine-hole for the Evangels, batting 2-for-3 with four RBIs, including a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the third.
  • The Evangels hits were spread out amongst the lineup as Medina and German Sepulveda were the only MACU players to record multiple hits in the contest.
  • With the doubleheader sweep, Mid-America Christian improved to 5-1 all-time against Houston-Victoria and remained undefeated on the season.
