Women’s Soccer Bests Baker 2-0 For First Road Win

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – For the first time in program history, the MACU women's soccer team was able to defeat Baker and on its home turf to boot as the Evangels came away with a 2-0 victory on Saturday night.

SCORING SUMMARY MATCH SUMMARY
  • Baker was the early aggressor through the first eight minutes as the Wildcats managed to put a shot on-target 7:58 in off the foot of Kat Sargent from 22-yards out on the left side, but Rachel Torres was easily able to make the two-handed save toward the top left.
  • Just under 10 minutes in, the Evangels were able to strike their way into the lead. Maintaining possession in the attacking half. MACU worked the ball from right to center just outside the 18-yard box as a Jasie Eischen relayed to Gladis Avalos before finding Jasmine Morales open at the top, lofting a beautiful ball from 20-yards out into the top left corner, just barely glancing off the fingertips of the keeper and into the back to make it a 1-nil advantage.
  • Two minutes later, freshman Madison Chavez would get a great look at potentially scoring her first career MACU goal. After winning the ball at midfield, Chavez sprinted past four Wildcats defenders into the left side of the penalty box before lofting a 15-yarder toward the right side. However, BU keeper Sophia Holloway made a sensational diving save to force the ball out the right side to keep it to a one-goal game.
  • MACU's ballistic attack continued with another great chance in the 17th minute when a right side cross found Annika Gerdau at the top of the penalty box, but her 16-yard low liner toward the bottom right corner was saved once again by Holloway on a phenomenal diving effort to keep the MACU lead to one.
  • Baker had a dangerous chance brew in the 33rd minute when a quick counter set up Sidney Claeys on the left edge of the 18-yard box, but fortunately for MACU, she was unable to put much power behind the shot as Torres made the easy save.
  • MACU got one more chance later in the half as an unclean possession by both teams at the top of the 18-yard box found the foot of an open Kadin Stinson, but her low liner was hit toward the center of the net as Holloway fell on it for the save.
  • Baker put together an offensive barrage early in the second half as the Wildcats attempted three tries and two corner kicks in the 49th and 50th minutes. The Wildcats best chance came on the first attempt as a deep send from midfield got through the entire defense to a streaking Darcy Cato heading toward the right post. However, Torres made perhaps the biggest save of her MACU career by going out at the point of attack and sliding in to block the open seven-yard attempt as the ball rolled out the right base line for a corner.
  • Off the ensuing corner, it looked as though Baker may come up with the equalizer as a battle for the loose ball caused it to bounce off the left post before being temporarily cleared.
  • Two minutes later, Mid-America Christian had its best first chance of the second half when a quick counter allowed Bruna Faleiro to dribble free down the right side before delivering a cross toward the left side of the box for Annika Gerdau. Unfortunately, a one-hop on the cross didn't allow for Gerdau to field the ball cleanly, giving time for Holloway to come up and block Gerdau's 10-yarder near the point of attack, stopping an almost guaranteed scoring chance for the Evangels.
  • Baker's last best chance at an equalizer came near the end of the 55th minute when Macie Albright fired a 40-yard bouncer through the defense that MACU let go thinking it would go out. However, the ball bounced off the right post before Torres safely dived on it to keep from being put in off the rebound.
  • From the 63rd minute onward, Mid-America Christian dominated the attack, outshooting the Wildcats 9-1 with a 6-0 edge in shots on-goal in that time frame.
  • After having plenty of close opportunities either just miss or were saved, Deborah Silveira gave MACU some insurance in the 83rd minute. After Chavez was able to put pressure on the right center-back to force a turnover, her open shot at goal was initially saved by Holloway, but Silveira was in just the right spot to punch it into the open right side of the net to make it a 2-0 game.
  • Chavez had another great chance at her first goal just a few minutes later as she was able to beat the defense on a high bouncing goal kick, but her 14-yard slip shot past the crashing keeper just barely went wide of the right post.
  • Chavez and Eischen each came up with a shot on-goal in the final minute, but Holloway made two more solid saves for the Wildcats to ultimately wrap-up the 2-0 final.
MATCH NOTES
  • While both teams were relatively even through the first 45 minutes with Baker holding a slim 8-6 shot edge with both teams putting four shots on-frame, Mid-America Christian dominated the second half, outshooting the Wildcats 11-5 with a 7-1 margin in on-target attempts.
  • For the second straight game, Jasmine Morales came up with the game-winning goal, extending her team-lead to three on the season. The assists for Avalos and Eischen on the play were the two players' first assists on the year.
  • Deborah Silveira's late goal was the first in her time in Oklahoma City as she is in her second season with the program while the assist for Madison Chavez credited on the play was the second of her MACU career.
  • Chavez led the offensive efforts with six shot attempts, three of which were on-frame.
  • In the fourth meeting between the two programs, Mid-America Christian was finally able to get their first victory against the Wildcats. The Evangels were able to avenge a 2-0 defeat to the Wildcats when MACU hosted them at the Dill Soccer Field last year.
