Women’s Soccer Splashes Central Baptist 4-0 in Soggy Battle

OKLAHOMA CITY – On a wet, rainy evening at the Dill Soccer Field on Monday, the MACU women's soccer put together a big second half offensively as the Evangels ran away with a 4-0 victory over Central Baptist (Ark.).
 
SCORING SUMMARY MATCH SUMMARY
  • Even though Mid-America Christian (6-0) was able to hold most of the possession through most of early portions of the first half, only Central Baptist (2-5-1) forward Amanda Parreiras was able to put a shot on-goal through the first 18 minutes. At the 9:05 mark, her 20-yard attempt from near the top left corner of the penalty box was lofted toward the top right, but MACU goalkeeper Rachel Torres was able to make the easy corral to keep the Mustangs off the board.
  • At the top of the 25th minute, the Evangels were able to push the game-winner across. After Madison Chavez was able to deflect a lofted ball at the top of the box off her knee before running it down inside the box. After winning the ball away from the defender, Chavez had her 14-yard shot stopped by the keeper trying to crash at the point of attack, but Deborah Silveira was able to corral the loose ball and hit a sliding shot in toward the uncontested right post to make it a 1-0 game.
  • MACU's best opportunity for some insurance before the halftime break came with just over nine minutes to go when Alissa Taylor ran down a deflected cross by Alison Mora toward the left side of the box, dribbling around a defender before firing a rocket from 15-yards out toward left post. However, CBC goalkeeper Bailey Walerczyk made a strong two-handed save to keep it to a 1-nil game at the break.
  • The Evangels offensively were able to get a barrage of shots off through the first 13 minutes of the second half, outshooting the Mustangs 10-1, but MACU was still unable get its insurance with the only on-target attempt coming off the foot of Gladis Avalos in the 50th minute.
  • Ten minutes later, Avalos was able to finally find the back of the net on an incredible shot. Jasmine Morales and Annika Gerdau were able to team up to dispossess the Mustangs near the left sideline, Gerdau crossed it to Avalos on the right side as the junior forward lofted a 30-yarder just underneath the middle of the crossbar to bring the score to 2-0.
  • In the last four minutes, MACU picked up a pair of scores to all but put the game out of reach. With just over three minutes to go, Maria Alonso sent a ball into the box from midfield the slipped through the hands of the goalkeeper trying come up to snare the ball as Mia Willyerd got behind everyone to punch in the open point-blank shot.
  • Just a minute later, Madison Chavez got her chance to score her fourth goal of the season. On the ensuing play, Francesca Martella was taken down by the defense inside the 18-yard box, setting up the Evangels with the penalty kick. On the PK, Chavez juked the keeper to diving toward the right post before rifling it into the open middle, closing out the scoring at 4-0.
MATCH NOTES
  • Overall for the match, Mid-America Christian dominated the offensive possession, outshooting Central Baptist 30-7 with a 14-3 margin in shots on-goal.
  • Francesca Martella led the balanced offensive effort with five shot attempts, three of which were on-goal.
  • Deborah Silveira's game-winning goal in the 25th minute marked her second career goal and the first game-winner in her two-year MACU career.
  • Gladis Avalos' second half score moved her alone for the team-lead in goals with her fifth of the year while Annika Gerdau's assist tied her for the team-lead with Madison Chavez with her third of the season.
  • The 87th minute goal by Mia Willyerd marked her second of the year while Chavez's score a minute later is her fourth of the 2023 campaign.
  • Rachel Torres pitched her third complete-game shutout of the season, improving to 6-0 in goal after tallying three saves.
  • With the victory, Mid-America Christian is off to its first six-game win streak to start a season since the 2010 season when the Evangels won 10 games in a row.
  • The Evangels have also defeated the Mustangs in four straight meetings, including three straight shutouts with their last matchup coming on Sept. 28, 2010 in a 5-0 victory at the Dill Soccer Field.

  • Mid-America Christian will be back in-action on Thursday night as the Evangels will host one of their toughest non-conference opponents of the season as MACU will take on Arizona Christian for a 5 p.m. kickoff at the Dill Soccer Field.
