Women’s Soccer Blows by Bulldogs, 9-0

OKLAHOMA CITY – The MACU women's soccer team put together its most dominant offensive performance since 2020 as the Evangels ran away with a 9-0 victory over McPherson (Kan.) at the Dill Soccer Field on Monday evening.

SCORING SUMMARY MATCH SUMMARY
  • Mid-America Christian (5-0) was able to pepper the McPherson (1-2) defense through the first 25 minutes, firing off 11 shot attempts, including putting five on-goal, but the Evangels were unable to find the back of the net.
  • In the 26th minute, the Evangels finally put across the game-winner. After Annika Gerdau was able to run down an errant right-side cross to the left side of the 18-yard box, the junior forward lofted a cross back into the middle of the box that glanced off the head of Francesca Martella. As McPherson goalkeeper Elizabeth Scheuerman tried to corral the ball on the right side of the box, freshman forward Madison Chavez beat her to the ball, firing in a six-yard half-volley into the middle of the net, setting the score to 1-nil.
  • Five minutes later, Gerdau found her first goal of the 2023 season. After Jasmine Morales was fouled from about 30-yards out on the right side of the box, Gerdau rifled a low-liner toward the left post that just barely squeezed in-between the post and the diving keeper, extending the edge to 2-0.
  • With just under 10 minutes remaining in the half, Chavez came up with a big defensive play in the midfield with a stellar on-ball tackle before delivering an excellent cross to Bruna Faleiro breaking in toward the right side of the box. With the keeper attempting to crash the play, Faleiro slipped her 10-yarder into the top right corner before Scheuerman could react, stretching the lead to three.
  • Just a few minutes later, Faleiro added an assist to go with her first goal of the season when a deflected ball went out the back line for a right-side corner. On the low-liner, Faleiro's corner took a one-hop to Maria Alonso, who from six-yards out punched her shot in through the right post, making a 4-nil lead.
  • The Evangels added one more for good measure just before the break. After a takeaway on MACU's defensive side, Alonso relayed a pass to Faleiro on the right side, who sent it forward on the run for both Chavez and Jasmine Morales. As both players on-top of the Bulldogs keeper going after the ball, Chavez beat everyone before sliding a wide-open shot from 14-yards out into the left side to make it a 5-0 game at the half.
  • Early in the second half, the Evangels continued their offensive onslaught when Allana Porto dished a pass over to Alonso on the left side, dribbling through four different McPherson defenders before firing a 15-yard low liner from the left side to the inside of the lower right post to set the score to 6-nil in the 50th minute.
  • In the 68th minute, Mia Willyerd recorded her first MACU goal of the season on a pure hustle play. After receiving a cross to the middle on MACU's side of midfield, the speedy junior forward dribbled past five Bulldogs defender, including knocking down a failed clearance with her head on the last defender before launching a 16-yarder into the top left corner, making it a 7-0 contest.
  • Three minutes later redshirt sophomore forward Lissette Taylor found the back of the net for her first career Evangels goal. After running down a deep send toward the right side of the box, Taylor cut by one defender toward the middle before dribbling back toward her right, hitting an 18-yard low line drive inside the right post, extending the MACU lead to eight.
  • With just under a minute left, another MACU newcomer experienced her first goal scoring opportunity. With 45 seconds left, Olivia Schoen received a middle cross from Taylor, taking a dribble to her right before putting her 15-yarder from the left side off the hands of the keeper and into the bottom right to secure the 9-nil victory.
