Women’s Soccer Stuns No. 19 John Brown for First Win over Golden Eagles since 2011

OKLAHOMA CITY – The MACU Women's Soccer team picked up one of its biggest victories in program history at the Dill Soccer Field on Tuesday night as the Evangels defeated No. 19 John Brown 2-0 for its first win over the Golden Eagles since 2011.

SCORING SUMMARY MATCH SUMMARY
  • First Half
    • Mid-America Christian (8-2-2, 3-1 SAC) put together a downright dangerous chance right out of the gate just 17 seconds in when Brae Baker put together a perfectly placed deep ball down the right sideline for a wide open, unchecked Caitlin Hirst. With a one-on-one with the keeper, her high-aimed shot was pushed over the crossbar by JBU keeper Marely Fonseca.
    • John Brown (6-5-1, 3-1 SAC) had great chances in the 11th minute and 21st minute by Lauren Walter and Julia Lambert, but both players great looks were sent just barely wide left of the post to keep it a scoreless game.
    • MACU's next best chance at the go-ahead goal came in the 18th minute when Jasie Eischen had the takeaway in the midfield and dribbled all the way to the 18-yard box in-space before trying to loft a shot to the top left corner. However, her 20-yard shot was snared by Fonseca to keep it a scoreless game.
    • Mid-America Christian had another solid chance to go ahead before the half when a deep send down the left sideline found Brae Baker, who was able to tap and drive past her defender and dribble into the left side of the 18-yard box. However, she wasn't able to generate much power on her open 15-yarder as once again Fonseca snared to send the game into the half scoreless.
  • Second Half
    • While neither team was able to generate much in terms of offense in the first 11 minutes of the second stanza, Mid-America Christian was able to capitalize off a high line played by the JBU center-backs as Asley Baker's clearance from the 18-yard box found the run of her sister Brae Baker as she was able to sprint past the Golden Eagles defense. With a one-on-one with the keeper, Baker slipped a 16-yarder just inside the left post for the opening score.
    • In the 67th minute, MACU once again took advantage of an assertive Golden Eagles defense as Fonseca came way out of the 18-yard box to play an overcooked deep ball sent for the run of Deborah Silveira. However, Silveira was able to block the attempted clearance by the keeper as the 35-yard deflection bounced high and into the back of the net to extend the MACU lead to 2-0.
    • With JBU aggressively trying to find a way back, the Evangels defense forced several off-target shots by the Golden Eagles as the only shot that was on-frame came in the 76th minute off the foot of Elise Bosma. However, her 12-yard strike from the right side lacked power as Rachel Torres smothered the low liner toward the right post to seal the 2-0 victory.
MATCH NOTES
  • Even though John Brown did hold a 20-11 shot advantage in the contest, Mid-America Christian was far more effective at putting shots on-frame as MACU had eight shots on-goal to just five for the Golden Eagles.
  • The game-winning goal for Brae Baker gave her the out-right goal scoring lead on the team with her eighth of the season and her second game-winner of the year. The assist to Asley Baker marked her second assist. It was the third time this season that the Baker sisters liked up on a scoring play this season.
  • The score for Deborah Silveira went down as her fifth goal of the season, extending her season point total to 13 on the year.
  • Rachel Torres earned her 22nd win and her 10th career shutout in-goal after finishing with five saves. Torres is now the fourth MACU keeper in the NAIA Era to notch double-digit shutouts. Her 22nd win moves her into a tie with Kaitlyn Whitten (2013-15) for the fourth-most wins for a MACU goalkeeper.
  • By getting the win against the NAIA powerhouse program, MACU snapped its 14-match winless streak against John Brown. The result also marked MACU's first NAIA Top 25 win of the season and the second positive result against a ranked foe after battling No. 10 Columbia to a 1-1 road draw on Sept. 18.
  • The last time MACU defeated an NAIA Top 25 opponent came on Oct. 2, 2012 when the Evangels defeated No. 4 Oklahoma City 2-1 at the Dill Soccer Field
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will have another crucial SAC home match next Tuesday as the Evangels will host current SAC leader Oklahoma City for a 5 p.m. kickoff at the Dill Soccer Field.
