WINFIELD, Kan. – The MACU baseball team continued to swing a red-hot bat in the series-opening doubleheader at Southwestern on Sunday while getting an epic pitching performance from Isaac Baez in game one as the Evangels cruised to a 13-2, 12-6 doubleheader sweep over the Moundbuilders at the Broadway Sports Complex.

PITCHING DECISIONS TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its 13 runs on 12 hits while Southwestern tallied its two runs on one hit and committed three errors.
  • The Evangels struck quickly in the top of the first. After D'Andre Gaines singled to center, Noel McGarry-Doyle smoked a liner that went over the right fielder's head, plating Gaines from first. McGarry-Doyle tried to turn the play into an inside-the-park homer, but was thrown out at home.
  • The Moundbuilders got the run back in the bottom of the second when MACU starter Isaac Baez gave up his only hit of the game on a leadoff solo homer that sailed over the left field wall to make it a 1-1 game.
  • MACU opened the game up with a three-run frame in the top of the third when Anthony Hampton reached on a walk, stole second and scored on Gaines' single to right. Gaines then came around to score on a throwing error when McGarry-Doyle smacked a single to center and then the left fielder missed the cutoff man on the throw. McGarry-Doyle also eventually came home when the third baseman misplayed a Medina grounder from third to bring the score to 4-1.
  • With some separation, the Evangels all but put the game away in the top of the fourth with a six-run frame. Zachary Stark got the scoring going when he hit an infield single to third, but the third baseman made an errant throw to first to try and make a play, allowing Taiga Sakuma to score. Courtesy runner Tylor Richey scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to make it 6-1 before a two-RBI single to right by McGarry-Doyle followed by an RBI double by Kyle Williams and an RBI single by Marcus Burton brought it to a 10-1 game.
  • The Evangels added insurance in each of the next three innings as Hampton's RBI groundout in the fifth, Burton's solo homer in the sixth and Richey's sacrifice fly to left in the seventh extended the MACU edge to 13-1.
  • Southwestern did manage to push one more run across in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch by MACU reliever Cruz Perez, but that would be all the Moundbuilders could muster in the 13-2 final.
  • Isaac Baez put together one of his best ever pitching performances for the Evangels in earning the win, nearly tossing a complete game at 6.2 innings of work, allowing just two earned runs on one hit with four walks while notching the fifth-most strikeouts in a single game in the NAIA Era with a career-best 15.
  • Noel McGarry-Doyle led MACU's batting efforts as one of four hitters with multiple hits, slashing 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and scored a pair of runs.
  • D'Andre Gaines reached base in all four of his plate appearances, slashing 2-for-2 with a pair of walks drawn to go with an RBI and scored three runs.
  • Marcus Burton tallied his first MACU home run of the season after slashing 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
GAME TWO

GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its 12 runs on 10 hits and committed seven errors while Southwestern scored its six runs on six hits and made three miscues.
  • Both pitchers cruised through the first three innings as both Carlos Escobosa and Conner Peck threw no-hitters while retiring the minimum.
  • The Evangels opened the scoring in emphatic fashion in the top of the fourth when Anthony Hampton cranked a leadoff solo homer down the left field line on the first pitch before Kyle Williams bashed a solo dinger to center with two strikes and two outs later in the frame to make it 2-0.
  • MACU added three more in the top of the sixth to bring it to 5-0 when D'Andre Gaines smacked a leg out double to left before utilizing his incredible speed to score from second on Noel McGarry-Doyle's unassisted groundout.
  • Southwestern was able to chip a few runs back on Escobosa's errant pickoff throw to first in the bottom of the fifth before adding one more on Carlos Camacho's sac fly to center to stretch the edge to 5-2 in the seventh.
  • In the top of the eighth, the Evangels got all of the insurance they would need behind a seven-run frame as McGarry-Doyle hammered a two-run homer to left-center before Julian Martinez drew a bases-loaded walk while Hampton and Gaines followed suit with a pair of two-RBI doubles to make it a commanding 12-2 Evangels advantage.
  • The Moundbuilders managed to take advantage of a sloppy defensive frame for MACU as three Evangels errors resulted in four SWC runs, closing the gap to 12-6.
  • Southwestern continued to muster a threat in the bottom of the ninth by getting runners to first and third, but MACU closer Kelton Lachelt shut the door on the Moundbuilders rally by getting a groundout to short to seal the 12-6 victory.
  • Carlos Escobosa notched his second career win with the Evangels after allowing just one unearned run on two hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.
  • The top of the MACU batting order was downright lethal as the tandem of Anthony Hampton, D'Andre Gaines, Noel McGarry-Doyle and Kyle Williams combined to bat 9-for-19 with four doubles, three homers, nine RBIs and scored seven of MACU's 12 runs.
  • Gaines led the way in the RBI department after slashing 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, four RBIs and scored twice while Hampton also went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a homer, driving in three RBIs and scoring three runs.
  • McGarry-Doyle was one of three Evangels with at least three RBIs after he finished 1-for-4 with three driven-in with a two-run shot.
  • With the result, Mid-America Christian improved to 9-2 all-time against the Moundbuilders.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will seek to sweep the series on Monday when the Evangels face off against Southwestern for a 2 p.m. first pitch at the Broadway Sports Complex in Winfield, Kansas.
