GAME NOTES

  • The Lions had the first great scoring chance in the top of the first when Sasha Jennings and Trista Ford each recorded infield singles to start the contest, but MACU starter Rachel Eggleston induced three straight flyouts to get out of the jam.
  • After the first five batters for MACU were retired to start the game, starting third baseman Kisbel Vizcaya started a two-out rally by slapping a single up the middle that glanced off the end of the glove of the second baseman, nabbed second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher and then scored when Hallie Wilson snuck a grounder between the first and second baseman to make it a 1-0 lead on the go-ahead single.
  • Vizcaya nearly started another two-out rally in the fourth when she legged out an infield single to short and stole second, but SAGU starting pitcher Natalie Zamora got Talyn Wheeler to hit a chopper to short to end the inning.
  • SAGU made its charge in the top of the fifth as Aracelie Mares led off the frame with a pinch-hit single before Sasha Jennings notched a single to left two batters later, advancing to second on a throwing error to put a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs. Then, Trista Ford came up with the game-winning hit when she hit a deep line drive double to left, bringing both runners home and making it a 2-1 game.
  • The Evangels did have opportunities to push tying in both the sixth and seventh innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Brooklyn Wilson hammered a double to the left-center field gap with one out, but MACU was unable to drive her in.  In the bottom of the seventh, the Evangels got runners on first and second with one out with Talyn Wheeler drawing a walk and Morgan Fowble getting hit by a pitch, but once again, MACU was unable to find the clutch hit as the Lions took the opening game.
  • Redshirt junior starting pitcher Rachel Eggleston tossed her first complete game of the season in the defeat, allowing two earned runs on five hits with three walks and struck out three.
  • Kisbel Vizcaya and Hallie Wilson led the MACU bats with four of the Evangels' five hits as Wilson slashed 2-for-2 with an RBI while Vizcaya batting 2-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases.
  • Brooklyn Wilson finished the day 1-for-3 while slugging her fourth double of the season and the 25th of her MACU career. Wilson now needs just one more two-bagger to break into MACU's all-time doubles top 10 list.
