Men’s Basketball Struggles to Slow Down Red-Hot Science & Arts in Road Defeat

CHICKASHA, Okla. – The MACU men's basketball team saw its 10-game win streak come to a tough end on Saturday afternoon at the Drover Fieldhouse as the Evangels struggled to slow down Science & Arts' blazing-hot shooting in a 104-89 defeat.

GAME SUMMARY
  • First Half
    • Mid-America Christian (16-6, 12-4 SAC) and Science & Arts (16-6, 13-5 SAC) both got off to strong starts offensively through the first five minutes with the Evangels grabbed a 16-12 advantage on Mikel Henderson's deep three from the left wing with 14:45 left.
    • On the ensuing possession, Cade Allen knocked down a three to start an 8-2 USAO run as the Drovers captured a 20-18 edge with 12:22 remaining.
    • Another DeAngelo Adkins three-ball and an Eddie Smith jumper gave MACU a three-point edge with 11:10 on the clock before the Drovers streaked back out in-front behind a dominant 15-2 streak as deep Reggie Quesada three from the left wing gave USAO its first double-digit advantage at 35-25 with just over eight minutes to go.
    • After the Drovers pushed their advantage up to 43-29 with 6:21 left, the Evangels scored six-unanswered to close the gap to 43-35 on a midrange floater with just under three minutes to go.
    • Science & Arts closed out the first half by scoring 11 of the final 13 points as Quezada's three with 30 seconds remaining send the Drovers into the break with the 54-37 lead.
  • Second Half
    • After the opening minute, Mid-America strung together a 10-2 run as Henderson was found wide open in the left corner with 17:13 left to close the gap to 58-49.
    • Two minutes later after USAO managed to build back a double-digit edge, the Evangels once again made a strong push behind a 9-2 surge as Magok Manyang drew the hoop and the harm to close it to a 66-60 game with 14:15 to go.
    • The closest MACU came to cutting into the Drovers advantage came at the 12:14 mark after scoring eight in a row with Adkins burying a right corner three to set the score to 69-67.
    • Over the next five-minute stretch, Science & Arts outscored the Evangels 14-5 to stretch its lead back to double-digits at 83-72 on Logan Dolan's foul shot with 7:45 remaining.
    • The Evangels managed to claw it back to a two-score game following a string of seven-straight as Seth Hurd's lay-in on the fastbreak relay to made it 83-79 with 5:47 left.
    • However, MACU was unable to knock the deficit to less than four the rest of the way as the Drovers scored 12 of the final 14 points over the last two minutes, wrapping up the 104-89 final.
GAME NOTES
  • Despite the tough result, Mid-America Christian shot the ball well, going 35-for-63 (55.6 percent) from the field and 12-of-31 (38.7 percent) from the three-point arc, but struggled from the line by knocking down 7-of-12 (58.3 percent).
  • Science & Arts fired on all cylinders all over the floor from tip-to-buzzer, going 34-for-61 (55.7 percent) and an incredible 18-of-28 (64.3 percent) from three as well as 18-for-23 (78.3 percent) from the charity stripe.
  • The Drovers controlled the glass, outrebounding MACU 35-26 with an 11-8 edge on the offensive glass.
  • Mid-America Christian had five players crack into double-figures with Mikel Henderson (20) leading the charge while also tallying a team-high seven assists. MACU's other double-figure scorers include Jasiah Lewis (19), DeAngelo Adkins (18), Seth Hurd (15) and Magok Manyang (11).
  • Adkins led MACU on the glass with seven rebounds while Lewis dished out six assists.
  • With the defeat, the Evangels have now dropped nine in a row to the Drovers while also seeing their 10-game win streak end. MACU sits in a tie for second in the SAC standings with Southwestern Assemblies of God at 12-4.

  • Mid-America Christian will now prepare for its toughest road contest of the season as the Evangels will take on No. 2 Langston for a 7:45 p.m. tip-off inside C.F. Gayles Arena on Thursday, Feb. 8.
