Baez Breaks Wins Record, Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY – Senior pitcher Isaac Baez made history on Sunday afternoon as he became the MACU Baseball team's NAIA Era (2007-present) career wins leader with the 14th of his two-year career as the Evangels split their doubleheader at Oklahoma City, picking up an 8-3 victory before falling 10-6 at Jim Wade Stadium.

    • Mid-America Christian (12-7, 3-1 SAC)
    • Oklahoma City (14-9, 0-1 SAC)
PITCHING DECISIONS TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its eight runs in nine hits while Oklahoma City tallied its three runs on seven hits and committed a pair of errors.
  • The Evangels made some noise offensively right out of the gate as D'Andre Gaines drew a one-out walk before Noel McGarry-Doyle cranked a towering 2-run homer over the center field wall to make it a 2-0 MACU lead.
  • MACU added to their advantage in the third and the fourth inning. With a runner at first and two outs, McGarry-Doyle and Kyle Williams smacked back-to-back singles to left to plate Taiga Sakuma. The Evangels utilized some small ball in the fourth. After Carlos Medina led off the frame with a double, a Jacob Police sac bunt moved Medina to third before Joel Nieves drove him in with a sac fly to left, setting the score to 4-0.
  • In the top of the sixth, the Evangels grabbed their largest lead of the contest when Gaines hammered a one-out solo blast over the center field wall before Anthony Hampton knocked another run in later in the frame on a grounder that deflected off the third baseman and into foul territory, allowing McGarry-Doyle to score from second to make it a 6-0 ballgame.
  • The Stars cut the lead in-half in the bottom half of the fifth off a pair of long balls, a solo shot from Chad Pike and a 2-run blast from Aiden Van Rensum to close the gap to 6-3.
  • OCU threatened once again in the bottom of the sixth when the first two batters reached on a pair of singles to start the inning, but the Evangels made the move to their closer Cameron Brown out of the pen as notched three outs on a pickoff to first, a strikeout and a flyout to deep left-center in-between an infield single to third to keep it to a 6-3 contest.
  • In the top of the seventh, MACU took advantage of a Stars miscue to add some insurance runs as Williams reached on a fielding error by the second baseman before Hampton blasted a deep two-run home run over the left field wall to ultimately give MACU the 8-3 victory.
  • By getting the victory, Isaac Baez improved to 5-1 on the mound and moved into a tie for the second-most wins for a pitcher in the NAIA. The Santa Maria, California product also surpassed an Evangels legend for the program's NAIA Era career wins record with his 14th at MACU, overtaking the former 2018 Sooner Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year Keisy Portorreal for the top spot in the MACU book.
  • Noel McGarry-Doyle finished just a triple away from hitting for a cycle, slashing 3-for-4 with a double and his fourth home run of the season while tallying two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. The two-run dinger in the top of the first was the 15th of his MACU career, making him just one of eight players in the NAIA Era to reach 15 or more career long balls.
  • D'Andre Gaines also had a productive day from the plate, slashing 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk and a pair of runs scored while Anthony Hampton batted 1-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs.
  • The victory for the Evangels marked their first win against Oklahoma City at Jim Wade Stadium since coming away with an 8-7 win back on Apr. 15, 2011.

GAME NOTES
  • Oklahoma City scored its 10 runs on 10 hits while the Evangels scored their six runs on 11 hits.
  • Mid-America Christian opened the scoring in the top of the second when Jacob Police cranked an 0-2 pitch with two outs over the left field wall to set the score to 1-0.
  • The Evangels ran into all sorts of trouble in the bottom of the second as MACU gave up eight runs in the frame, including a grand slam to the SAC's home run leader Trent Kiraly as MACU found itself in an 8-1 hole.
  • MACU gradually worked its way out of the massive deficit. In the top of the third, the Evangels pushed across a pair of runs on a Taiga Sakuma RBI double before he crossed home plate on a Noel McGarry-Doyle RBI groundout to third.
  • Mid-America Christian closed the gap to three just an inning later on back-to-back RBI doubles by Zachary Stark and Sakuma once again to close the deficit to 8-5.
  • The Stars threatened to put up another crooked inning in the bottom of the sixth when OCU loaded the bases on a double and a pair of walks with no one out. Despite MACU reliever Kelton Lachelt coming in and hitting the first batter he saw to bring in a run, the senior reliever managed to limit the damage to a sac fly to left before inducing a groundout and a flyout to keep it to a 10-5 game.
  • The Evangels threatened early in the seventh as back-to-back singles by D'Andre Gaines and McGarry-Doyle put runners at the corners before Kyle Williams plated Gaines with a sac fly to left. However, MACU was unable to do any more damage as the Stars held on for the 10-6 win.
  • It was a tough outing for MACU starter Carlos Escobosa, who suffered his first loss with the Evangels. The junior righty allowed managed to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the first, but allowed three earned runs on three hits with three walks and no strikeouts.
  • Taiga Sakuma and Zachary Stark led the MACU bats with each tallying three-hit days. Sakuma ended up slashing 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs and a run scored while Stark ended his day 3-for-3 with an RBI.
  • With the two teams splitting the opening doubleheader, it will set up a rubber match on Monday with the winner taking the series.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will close out the three-game series on Monday with the game slated for a 3 p.m. first pitch at Jim Wade Stadium.
