OKLAHOMA CITY – The MACU baseball team found itself down by four runs after just one inning of play, but there was no panic in the Evangels as MACU put together a big-time rally, scoring 14 runs over the final three innings, including a 10-run eighth to come away with the 18-8 victory at Oklahoma City inside Jim Wade Stadium.

PITCHING DECISIONS TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its 18 runs on 16 hits while Oklahoma City pushed across its eight runs on nine hits and committed one error.
  • The Evangels threatened to put up a crooked inning in the top of the first when they loaded the bases on a pair of singles by Taiga Sakuma and Noel McGarry-Doyle walk, but the Stars limited the damage to just one run as Kyle Williams grounded into a double play before Carlos Medina grounded into a fielder's choice.
  • Oklahoma City came through with its threat in the bottom of the first as back-to-back batters were hit by a pitch before Darian Duhon put the Stars in-front 3-1 on a three-run shot to right-center. OCU pushed across two more runs in the frame on Aiden Van Rensum's double to left-center to set the score to 5-1.
  • MACU chipped away at the deficit over the next two frames, as RBI knocks from Taiga Sakuma in the second as well as Carlos Medina and Jacob Police in the third closed the gap to 5-4.
  • However, the Stars utilized a big three-run fifth to recapture a four-run advantage as a two-run homer by Trent Kiraly and a Van Rensum single through the left side extended the lead back to 8-4.
  • With two outs in the top of the sixth, D'Andre Gaines stemmed the tide for the Evangels as he was able to lift a three-run homer just over the right field wall to trim the deficit back to 8-7. MACU tied it at 8-8 just an inning later when Jacob Police was able to ground a single through the left side to score Anthony Hampton.
  • With momentum on the Evangels' side, OCU's pitching fell apart in the top of the eighth. After Sakuma led off the frame with a walk, Gaines brought him in with a single to center to give MACU the lead for good at 9-8.
  • A Noel McGarry-Doyle walk and a Kyle Williams bunt single loaded the bases before the Stars walked in three base runners with Hampton, Medina and Police each drawing a free pass to extend the edge to 12-8.
  • The Evangels then started pushing across runs with the bats as Zachary Stark followed suit with an RBI single to left, Sakuma smashed a two-RBI single to center and McGarry-Doyle slapped a two-RBI single to right before Williams wrapped up the scoring at 18-8 on an RBI groundout to first.
  • After coming into the game in relief in the second inning, Zane Robeaux closed out the contest by throwing a three-up, three-down frame to close out the 18-8 final.
  • By getting his 14th career win, Robeaux joined teammate Isaac Baez at the top of MACU's NAIA Era (2008-present) wins record book after Baez set the mark in Sunday's 8-3 win over the Stars. In the win, Robeaux allowed just three earned runs on six hits with only one walk and struck out six over seven innings of work.
  • The MACU bats put across a slew of runs led by D'Andre Gaines, who finished the contest 2-for-4 with his fourth homer of the season for four RBIs and three runs scored to go with a pair of walks.
  • Three Evangels hitters finished with three hits as Taiga Sakuma slashed 3-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and three runs, Jacob Police batted 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs and Noel McGarry-Doyle went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run.
  • Anthony Hampton also joined Gaines and Sakuma with a three-run game after reaching base four times on a 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and was hit by a pair of pitches.
  • By getting the win, MACU won its second-straight SAC series after taking two out of three in a series against Science & Arts at the MACU Baseball Field from Mar. 1-2.
  • The Evangels have also won the season series against the Stars for the second-straight year while the game marked the first time MACU had ever run-ruled the powerhouse OCU program.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will return home on Friday to start a three-game series against Central Christian. The Evangels will open the slate with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. before wrapping up the series with a noon game on Saturday at the MACU Baseball Field.
