Baseball Twirls Three-Hit Gem in 9-0 Win over Southern Nazarene

OKLAHOMA CITY – The MACU baseball team put together a stellar performance in all three facets of the game, including the Evangels' pitching staff allowing just three hits in a 9-0 shutout victory over NCAA Division II Southern Nazarene at the MACU Baseball Field on Tuesday afternoon.

PITCHING DECISIONS TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its nine runs on nine hits while Southern Nazarene tallied just three hits and committed three errors.
  • The Evangels bats injected some energy into the game right off the bat in the bottom of the first as Taiga Sakuma's lead-off single to right and Noel McGarry-Doyle reaching on a hit-by-pitch allowed Kyle Williams to bring both home on a ripped two-RBI double to the left-center field wall, setting the score to 2-0.
  • MACU took advantage of a SNU miscue to add to its lead in the bottom of the second as Sakuma drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch before reaching home on an errant throw made by the third baseman on D'Andre Gaines' at-bat to make it a 3-0 game.
  • The Evangels chipped in one more in the bottom of the third following Jacob Police's one-out single as Zachary Stark later hammered an RBI double down the left field line to secure the 4-0 advantage.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Mid-America Christian all but put the game away when Carlos Medina hammered a high flyball that got over the left field wall with two outs once again to stretch the edge to 7-0.
  • The Evangels added a little extra insurance in both the seventh and eighth innings as Police came around to score in the seventh after hammering a triple to right-center and came home on the errant relay throw going into the MACU dugout. In the eighth, it was Medina delivering his fourth RBI of the game after slapping a two-out single through the left side to plate Joel Nieves to wrap-up the 9-0 final.
  • In picking up his first career win, Breyllin Suriel was dazzling on the mound in the start, tossing a no-hitter through four innings while allowing only a walk to go with a MACU career-high seven strikeouts.
  • MACU's pitching success continued with Dylan Lyddon in relief as the sophomore righty threw three scoreless, just barely allowing a single hit to go with three strikeouts. Both Kelton Lachelt and Jordan Smith each tossed a scoreless inning of relief as well.
  • After being held without a homer over his last 10 games, Medina came up huge for MACU as his three-run homer highlighted a 2-for-4 day and tied a career-high four RBIs in the outing.
  • Kyle Williams also put together a big day at the plate, batting 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to go with a run scored.
  • Coming off earning the Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Week award, Jacob Police stayed red-hot at the dish, slashing 2-for-3 with a triple and a pair of runs scored while also reaching on a walk.
  • Incredibly, Noel McGarry-Doyle continued his torrid on-base streak as the junior outfielder did not record an official at-bat after reaching base on three walks and two hit-by-pitches while scoring a pair of runs. As a result, McGarry-Doyle raised his season on-base percentage to .551, the highest clip in the SAC.
  • The victory over Southern Nazarene snapped MACU's seven-game losing streak to the Crimson Storm, doing so in a big way. The win marked just the second time the Evangels had shut out SNU, the first since picking up a 4-0 win at the MACU Baseball Field on Feb. 8, 2007.
  • The win marked the fifth-straight for the Evangels, their second-longest win streak of the season after notching seven in a row from Feb. 9-20.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will return to Sooner Athletic Conference play on Friday as the Evangels head to Goodwell, Oklahoma for a three-game series against Oklahoma Panhandle State. MACU will open the slate with a Friday doubleheader slated for a noon start before closing out the series at noon on Saturday.
