GREENVILLE, S.C. – The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) announced its 2023-24 All-Central Region Team on Tuesday as the MACU women's basketball team raked in the honors with junior guard Shy Christopher earning the Player of the Year award while head coach Hannah Moeller drew in the Coach of the Year nod.
Along with Christopher, senior guard Jaci Calavan garnered First Team accolades while junior guard Kylee Scheer was tabbed to the Second Team.
In her eighth season with the program, Moeller once again guided the Evangels to another stellar season as MACU closed out the year with a 22-9 overall record and went 15-7 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. During her eight-year stint with the Evangels, Moeller has amassed a 175-68 (.720) overall record and a 106-46 (.697) mark in league play.
Excluding the COVID-19 impacted 2020-21 season where MACU played just 12 games, the Evangels have won 20 or more games in each of the last seven seasons and 15 or more SAC games over the last three campaigns.
During Moeller's tenure, the Evangels have been selected to compete in four-straight NAIA Tournaments while previously qualifying for four consecutive NCCAA Championship Tournaments, winning the national title during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.
In her second season with MACU women's basketball program, Christopher put up remarkable offensive numbers, finishing as the top scorer in the SAC with 604 points (19.5 ppg), marking the fourth-most points and the fourth-best scoring average for a player during the team's NAIA Era (2007-present).
The Jacksonville, Arkansas native also posted the fourth-most made field goals after shooting 226-of-456 from the field while her 49.6 percent shooting percentage ranks as the fifth-best in the NAIA Era. On-top of that, Christopher was a prolific free throw shooter, knocking down the fourth-most tosses (131) in that very same time frame.
Over the course of her two-year MACU career, Christopher ranks second in MACU's NAIA Era career scoring chart with 1112 points, while ranking first in scoring average (18.8 ppg), second-most made field goals (416), third-most shot attempts (843) and currently ranks third in field goal percentage (49.3). Christopher is also charting on the career top five list in made free throws with the fourth-most made tosses (248) on the third-most attempts (345).
In wrapping up a two-year MACU career, Calavan's imprint can be found all over MACU's NAIA Era record book as well.
During the 2023-24 season, the Stillwater, Oklahoma product set NAIA Era single season top 10 marks in points (526, 8th), scoring average (17.0, 10th), made field goals (170, 10th) and made three-pointers (75, 7th). Calavan set the record for the best free throw percentage in a season after going 111-for-121 (91.7 percent), becoming the first MACU player with at least 60 made foul shots to ever shoot better than 90 percent from the free throw line.
Calavan closed out her two-year stint in the career record books as well, notching top 10 marks in: points (963, 8th), scoring average (16.6 ppg, 4th), rebounding average (4.7 rpg, 10th), made field goals (292, 10th), made three-pointers (140, 5th), three-point shooting percentage (38.7, 3rd), made free throws (225, 5th) and set the career free throw percentage record (88.2).
In her first season with the Evangels, Scheer played a major impact all over the court for MACU. The Cheney, Kansas native finished third on the team in scoring (348 points, 11.2 ppg) while going 123-for-272 (45.2 percent) from the field, 54-of-143 (37.8 percent) from three and knocked down 48-of-59 (81.4 percent) from the free throw line.
Overall, the biggest impact that Scheer made was in her stellar floor game, leading the team in rebounding (189, 6.1 rpg) and steals (49, 1.6 spg) while tallying the third-most assists (73) on the second-best assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3).
