No. 22 Baseball Batters No. 19 Oklahoma Wesleyan in Rain-Shortened Matinee

OKLAHOMA CITY – The wet, cold weather on Wednesday afternoon was unable to cool down the red-hot No. 22 MACU Baseball bats as the Evangels took down No. 19 Oklahoma Wesleyan 10-1 in in a rain-shortened five-inning affair at the MACU Baseball Field.

PITCHING DECISIONS TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its 10 runs on 10 hits and committed one error while Oklahoma Wesleyan scored its lone run on six hits and also notched an error.
  • Kyle Williams got the hit party going for the Evangels in the bottom of the first. After Noel McGarry-Doyle was pegged by a pitch and stole second, Williams hit a deep fly ball that just barely got over the left field wall out of the reach of the outfielder to give the Evangels the 2-0 lead.
  • Oklahoma Wesleyan put together a major threat in the top of the second by tallying three-straight one-out singles to load the bases. However, MACU starting pitcher Breyllin Suriel was able to work his way out of the jam by striking out Braydon Caldwell before Joel Nieves made a sensational running grab on a shallow flyball to left to end the threat.
  • The Eagles looked as though they were going to keep MACU off the board in the bottom of the second after Nieves grounded out to second for the second out, but after Zachary Stark extended the inning by drawing a walk, Taiga Sakuma slapped a ground ball single in-between short and third to bring in a run. After D'Andre Gaines drew a walk to load the bases, McGarry-Doyle all but put the game out of reach when he hammered a grand slam to left-center field to make it a 7-0 game.
  • OKWU scored their lone run of the game in the top of the third by smashing a lead-off solo home run over the right field wall, but the Evangels got the run back in their half of the third when Jacob Police reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second. While stealing third, Police ended up scoring when an errant throw got away from the third baseman, setting the score to 8-1.
  • The Evangels added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth when Gaines slid in to score from third on a Williams RBI groundout to second before McGarry-Doyle ended up coming across on a wild pitch to make it a 10-1 game.
  • Oklahoma Wesleyan tried to muster a one-out threat in the top of the fifth on back-to-back singles, but Suriel was able to induce back-to-back pop outs to Williams at first to get out of the jam.
  • After Nieves reached first on a bunt single to the pitcher, who slid trying to field the ball in the bottom of the fifth, the umpires ended up calling the game official due to hazardous playing conditions from the rain.
  • Suriel earned his second-straight win after throwing four no-hit innings last Tuesday against Southern Nazarene. The junior righty tossed a complete five-inning game, allowing only one earned run on six hits with no walks and struck out seven batters.
  • McGarry-Doyle continued to stay hot from the plate while reaching base in all three of his plate appearances. The right fielder finished 1-for-1 with his grand slam homer with four RBIs and scored three runs. In his second year with MACU, McGarry-Doyle surpassed former teammate Andrew Enwiya for the fourth-most career RBIs in the NAIA Era (2008-present) with 95 so far in his Evangels career.
  • Williams also continued to produce in MACU's cleanup spot as the first baseman finished 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs.
  • Gaines and Police combined to score four of MACU's 10 runs as Gaines finished 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base with his pair of runs while Police slashed 1-for-3 with two stolen bases along with his runs.
  • Facing each other for the first time in six years, the Evangels won the face-off in the top 25 showdown as prior to the start of the game, MACU was ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll for the first time in program history at No. 22 while the Eagles came in as the No. 19 team in the NAIA.
UP NEXT

MACU will open the slate with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Friday before closing things out with a noon game on Saturday at the MACU Baseball Field.
