Softball Splits Doubleheader at Wayland Baptist to Win Inaugural Series

PLAINVIEW, Texas – The MACU softball season won its first ever four-game Sooner Athletic Conference series at Wayland Baptist on Saturday as the Evangels split the doubleheader finale by taking game one 7-1 before falling in game two, 3-2.

GAME ONE
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 7, Wayland Baptist 1
    • Mid-America Christian (26-12, 19-8 SAC)
    • Wayland Baptist (16-25, 12-15 SAC)
PITCHING DECISIONS TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its seven runs on nine hits and committed one error while Wayland Baptist tallied its lone run on five hits and made five errors.
  • The Evangels managed to put together a crooked three-run first inning. Following Kisbel Vizcaya's leadoff groundout to third, back-to-back singles by Emylee Campbell and Brooklyn Wilson put runners at second and third for Makenzie Thurman to slap an RBI single to left before Wilson came across to score on a throwing error to home. Karlee Danielson then followed with an RBI single to center in the very next at-bat to extend the Evangels' edge to 3-0.
  • In the top of the third, Campbell led off the frame with a scoring play when she hit a hot shot down the third base line for a triple getting all the way to the left field wall while a bobble by the left fielder allowed her to score on the play, setting the score to 4-0.
  • Neither team was able to muster a score until the top of the seventh when the Evangels managed to blow the game wide open. Following back-to-back singles from Talyn Wheeler and Vizcaya, Campbell launched a two-RBI double to center before stealing third and scoring on Thurman's RBI groundout to third, extending the Evangels' edge to 7-0.
  • The Pioneers mustered their only run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh as a one-out hit-by-pitch and a throwing error by the pitcher trying to get the lead runner before moving both into scoring position on a groundout to second. WBU then pushed the run across when a sharply hit chopper glanced off of Chana Wolfe's glove to the second baseman, but the throw over to first was not in-time as Jadyn Fernandez's infield single made it a 7-1 game.
  • After getting the lineout to left to end the contest, Wolfe got the win in a complete-game outing, allowing just one unearned run on five hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts.
  • Campbell finished just a home run away from hitting for the cycle, as she slashed 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and scored three runs while Thurman also tallied a pair of RBIs on a 1-for-3 day with a run scored and a hit-by-pitch.
  • By getting the victory, Mid-America Christian locked up the series victory over the Pioneers.

GAME NOTES
  • Wayland Baptist scored its three runs on seven hits while the Evangels scored their two runs on five hits and committed a pair of errors.
  • The Pioneers put together the first major scoring threat of the game in the bottom of the first as back-to-back singles and a wild pitch put a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs, but MACU starting pitcher Gia Reynosa got out of the jam by striking out WBU pitcher Addy Rich to keep it to a scoreless game.
  • WBU threatened in the bottom of the second as an error, a single and a stolen base once again put runners at second and third with one out, but once again, Reynosa got out of it by inducing a pop out to short in foul territory before fielding a groundout to still keep it to a 0-0 contest.
  • After going down in-order through the first three innings, the Evangels were finally able to break through in the top of the fourth as a leadoff Kisbel Vizcaya single and a one-out Brooklyn Wilson single put runners at the corners before Morgan Fowble lofted a sacrifice fly to left to score pinch-runner Chana Wolfe to give MACU its only lead of the game at 1-0.
  • Some clutch WBU hits in the bottom of the fourth spelled disaster for the Evangels. With runners at second and third, Madison Martinez bashed a two-RBI double to center before coming across to score on Jadyn Fernandez's RBI single to center to give the Pioneers the 3-1 advantage.
  • MACU managed to get a run back in the bottom of the fifth as a leadoff Aubrey Meyers single to center allowed her pinch-runner Taela Hubbard to advance to second on a sac bunt and to third on a stolen base with two outs. Hallie Wilson then ripped an RBI triple down the left field line to close it to 3-2 with the tying run on third, but Rich managed to get Vizcaya to fly out to center to end the threat.
  • The Evangels last great chance to tie came in the top of the sixth when Brooklyn Wilson hammered a one-out double to the left field wall and trotted down to third on Fowble's ground out to short, but Rich once again ended the threat by getting Makenzie Thurman to ground out to second for the final out.
  • MACU was unable to get a baserunner in the top of the seventh as Wayland Baptist held on for the 3-2 win.
  • The victory for the Pioneers marked their first in program history over the Evangels.
  • Reynosa suffered the loss in the circle after allowing three earned runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts while Avery Schneringer came in to toss two scoreless innings of relief while allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out three.
  • MACU struggled to get the bats going against Rich as the Evangels finished with just five hits, two of which coming off the bat of Brooklyn Wilson who finished 2-for-3 with a single and a double. Hallie Wilson was the only other MACU player to notch an extra-base hit after finishing 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
  • Both Wilson's continue to climb up MACU's NAIA Era (2008-present) career record books as the two-bagger for Brooklyn marked the 32nd of her three-year MACU career, putting her just one back of Hanna Harris (2017-19) for a tie for fourth in the MACU books while Hallie's sixth career triple moved her into a four-way tie for fourth with Kelcey Gabriel (2009-10), Kenna McCoy (2013-15) and Taryn Callender (2014-17).
  • With eight games left in the SAC slate, the Evangels with their 19-9 conference record currently hold a four-game lead over Southwestern Christian (14-14) for the No. 3 spot in the league standings while sitting four games back of No. 6 Science & Arts (23-5)
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will return home next weekend for its final regular season home games as the Evangels host Langston for a four-game series on Friday and Saturday. MACU will open the slate with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday before closing it out with a twin-bill on Saturday slated for an 11 a.m. start before holding its Senior Day ceremony following the completion of the 1 p.m. game.
