Softball Sweeps Langston to Open Final Regular Season Home Series

OKLAHOMA CITY – The MACU softball team opened its final home weekend series of the regular season with a doubleheader sweep as the Evangels topped Langston 3-0 and 11-5 at Allen Field on Friday afternoon.

GAME ONE
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 3, Langston 0
    • Mid-America Christian (27-13, 20-9 SAC)
    • Langston (8-31, 4-25 SAC)
PITCHING DECISIONS TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its three runs on seven hits with one error while Langston notched just one hit and committed five errors.
  • Both teams struggled to find baserunners and scoring opportunities through the first four innings as the only real major threat that either team mounted came in the bottom of the second when Morgan Fowble led off the frame with a single to left before Cierra Russell was able to beat out an infield single on a liner knocked down by the pitcher, putting runners at first and second.
  • However, with one of MACU's best bunters in Stormy Haynes coming to the dish, Langston starter Brooke Stewart managed to get Haynes to uncharacteristically pop out on the sacrifice try before getting Talyn Wheeler to ground into a fielder's choice out to end the threat.
  • Langston's only real big threat came in the top of the fifth when Brysen Bartley got the Lions only hit on a single up the middle before safely getting to second on a fielder's choice to third where Madison Mora pulled her foot off the bag before trying to turn the double play at second, allowing LU to put runners at first and second with only one out. However, MACU starter Chana Wolfe navigated the trouble with ease by inducing a strikeout and a pop out to second to end the threat.
  • After not being able to muster much of a scoring threat the entire contest, the Evangels finally took advantage of a pair of huge errors by the Lions' shortstop as back-to-back fielding errors allowed Wheeler and Kisbel Vizcaya to reach before successfully pulling off a double steal. Karlee Danielson then drove in the first run by hitting a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Wheeler before Vizcaya came around to score on Emylee Campbell's single up the middle to make it a 2-0 game.
  • The Evangels once again took advantage of a fielding error by the LU shortstop as Cierra Russell reached with one out and stole second before Wheeler chopped an infield single to short. However, on the desperation throw to try and get Wheeler out at first, the first baseman muffed the catch, allowing Russell to come around for the final score of the contest, putting it at 3-0.
  • Wolfe tossed her first career complete game shutout in the victory and recorded her team-high 10th win, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out seven.
  • Despite a quiet game from the MACU bats, Vizcaya and Campbell continued to be the most productive bats in the lineup as Campbell finished 2-for-3 with an RBI while Vizcaya slashed 2-for-4 with a run scored.
GAME TWO
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 11, Langston 5
    • Mid-America Christian (28-13, 21-9 SAC)
    • Langston (8-32, 4-26 SAC)
PITCHING DECISIONS TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its 11 runs on 10 hits to go with an error while Langston tallied its five runs on 10 hits and committed two errors.
  • Unlike the first game, it did not take long for the Evangels to get the bats going. Even though Kisbel Vizcaya was caught stealing after drawing a leadoff walk, MACU quickly loaded the bases behind an Emylee Campbell walk and a Morgan Fowble single to left while a throwing error by the third baseman allowed Makenzie Thurman to reach.
  • With the bases juiced, Brooklyn Wilson executed a perfectly placed safety squeeze bunt to the pitcher to score the first run. In the very next at-bat, Karlee Danielson cleared the bases with a three-run jack hit over the left field fence to bring it to a four-run lead before Cierra Russell capped the scoring with an RBI double to left, plating Stormy Haynes and setting the score to 5-0.
  • In the bottom of the second, the Evangels once again would bat through the order and put up a five-run frame as Vizcaya started the scoring onslaught by dropping a bloop double into the right-center field gap before coming around on a wild pitch that allowed her to take third and then home on the ball going into the LU dugout.
  • With a six-run advantage, Fowble bashed a single up the middle before Makenzie Thurman hammered an RBI double to left to score pinch-runner Abby Hoover to bring it to 7-0. Following Danielson drawing a two-out walk, Kayten Herman plated both runners on-base with a deep two-RBI double to the left-center field wall before Russell once again got extras when she dropped an RBI bloop triple down the right field line that bounced off the diving Langston right fielder and into foul territory, stretching the advantage to 10-0.
  • The Lions scored their first run of the contest in the top of the third when Tandy Garrett hammered a two-out double into the left field corner before coming around to score on an errant throw at short during Meilani Butts' at-bat to make it a 10-1 game.
  • Overall, Langston managed to score five unanswered runs as an Alayna Edison two-RBI double in the top of the fourth and a Butts two-run homer to left-center in the fifth cut the Lions deficit in-half 10-5.
  • The Evangels struggled to get the bats going against LU reliever Nikeisha Saunders, who faced the minimum from the third through the fifth innings before Campbell finally got to the Lions pitcher by smashing a solo shot over the left field wall to wrap-up the scoring at 11-5.
  • Langston tried to put together one last threat in the top of the seventh with a Garrett leadoff single to left and a Brooke Stewart one-out single through the left side. However, the Evangels turned a hit-and-run attempt against the Lions when Fowble snared a foul pop out on the right side and relayed a throw down to Russell at second to turn the double play before the lead runner could get back, closing out the 11-5 final.
  • Senior pitcher Avery Schneringer got the win in what was potentially her final start at Allen Field, as she went 4.1 innings and allowed five earned runs on six hits with a pair of walks.
  • Allie Doncarlos narrowly missed getting the three-inning save after she threw a very solid 2.2 innings of relief, allowing no runs on four hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts.
  • The Evangels recorded their second multi-home run game of the season on Campbell and Danielson's jacks after getting a pair off the bats of Danielson and Brooklyn Wilson in MACU's 8-7 win over Southwestern Christian on Apr. 6.
  • Danielson led MACU's batting efforts by finishing 1-for-1 with three RBIs and scored a pair of runs to go with a walk.
  • Russell notched her first career multi-extra base hit game of her MACU career after slashing 2-for-3 with a double and a triple for two RBIs while Herman also finished with a pair of RBIs on her pinch-hit double.
  • Campbell and Thurman accounted for two runs apiece as Campbell finished the day 1-for-3 with a homer and an RBI to go with a walk while Thurman slashed 1-for-4 while hitting her 11th double of the season for an RBI.
  • By getting the victory, MACU has now either won or split six-straight Sooner Athletic Conference and seven of the eight league series slates this season.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will be looking to take the series on Senior Day Saturday as the Evangels host their final doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. The Evangels will honor their six graduating seniors following the completion of the 1 p.m. game.
