Baez Picked as Pitcher of the Year, Stanton Selected Coach of the Year, Record Nine Earn All-SAC Honors

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Sooner Athletic Conference unveiled its 2024 All-Conference honors on Monday afternoon as No. 14 MACU Baseball team raked in a program-record nine All-SAC accolades, including a pair of special honors as Isaac Baez was selected as the Pitcher of the Year while Brett Stanton garnered the Coach of the Year honor.

Overall, the Evangels had six players selected to the First Team as Baez was joined by junior catcher Zachary Stark, who was also selected as a Gold Glove recipient, as well as junior first baseman Kyle Williams, junior outfielder Noel McGarry-Doyle, sophomore outfielder D'Andre Gaines and senior pitcher Zane Robeaux.

A trio of MACU standouts were selected to the Second Team as sophomore second baseman Jacob Police, junior shortstop Carlos Medina and senior relief pitcher Cameron Brown were all tabbed to the team.

In his second season with the Evangels, Baez continued to put up unprecedented numbers from the mound. The Santa Maria, California native has made his imprint all over MACU's NAIA Era (2008-present) season and career record books as he became the Evangels' first ever 10-game winner in a season with his 5-2 victory over Science & Arts in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament on May 4. Baez also moved into ninth on the season strikeouts list with 86, the second-most in the SAC while also holding the league's second-most wins and second-best earned run average (2.78).

The senior righty has also continued to make his mark all over MACU's career record books as well as he is currently tied for the program record in wins (19), tied for the third-most strikeouts (174), tied for the third-most games started (29), tied for the fourth-most shutouts (2), as well as owns the fifth-lowest WHIP (1.21), the fifth-most innings pitched (160.1) and the sixth-lowest ERA (3.70).

On-top of being named MACU's second ever SAC Pitcher of the Year, joining Keisy Portorreal (2018) for that honor, Baez is the first Evangels pitcher to ever be named an All-SAC First Team performer.

In his fourth season at the helm and his fifth season overall, Stanton has guided the Evangels baseball program to new heights each year. Under Stanton, MACU wrapped up the regular season with a 36-10 overall record and won the program's first ever SAC Championship after going 20-4 in league play. MACU also impressively won all eight of its SAC regular season series matchups, becoming just the second team in the conference to accomplish that feat in the last 10 years.

Last season, Stanton led the Evangels to their first ever NCCAA World Series title, wrapping up the year with a 39-17 (.696) overall record after also leading MACU to its first ever NCCAA World Series appearance in 2022 where the Evangels amassed a 32-22 overall mark. In his four years as MACU's skipper, Stanton has amassed an impressive 133-77 (.633) record.

Another starting pitcher that put together an incredible senior season, Robeaux joined Baez in a top of the rotation that was downright deadly. After moving from the bullpen to the starting rotation mid-season, the Mustang, Oklahoma product finished the regular season with the SAC's lowest ERA (1.97) and currently holds the third-most wins (9) as well as the fifth-best strikeouts per nine innings rate (9.25). Entering Championship Monday, Robeaux is currently tied for the program's single season WHIP rate at 0.98 along with Portorreal (2020).

The three-year Evangel has put together a legendary career at MACU, holding the program record for strikeouts (195) as well as tied with Baez for the wins record (19) and holds multiple top 10 marks, including ERA (3.69, 5th), opponent batting average (.220, 4th), WHIP (1.19, 3rd), innings pitched (173, 5th), games started (25, 6th) and complete games (5, 7th).

Robeaux is collecting his second All-SAC accolade after being named an All-SAC Second Team performer during the 2022 season.

For the second-straight year, McGarry-Doyle earned All-SAC First Team honors after another sensational regular season in right field for the Evangels. The junior outfielder has been one of the best bats in MACU's lineup, posting a program-record and SAC-leading 64 RBIs while finishing tied for the team-lead in hits (65) with the second-best batting average (.392) and fourth-best slugging percentage (.639) off of 11 doubles, three triples and eight homers while scoring the third-most runs (46). His average currently sits as the sixth-best for a MACU player in a season. The Maple, Ontario, Canada product has also been incredible in the field as he has recorded a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on 84 chances, notching 83 putouts and an outfield assist.

Despite not even being through his second season at MACU, McGarry-Doyle has also made his marks all over the Evangels' career record book, as he currently owns the on-base percentage record (.499) and triples record (8), as well as top 10 marks in batting average (.390, 2nd), OPS (1.179, 2nd), runs (108, 2nd), hit-by-pitch (26, 2nd), slugging percentage (.680, 3rd), hits (128, 3rd), RBIs (114, 3rd), total bases (223, 4th), stolen bases (25, 4th), homers (19, 6th), walks (52, 6th) and doubles (22, 9th).

McGarry-Doyle is the just the fourth Evangel to be named a two-time All-SAC First Team performer, joining his teammate in Baez as well as Frensly Leito (2021, 2022) and former teammate Yan Ely Adames (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023).

In his first season with the Evangels, Williams put together one of the best hitting seasons for a MACU player in program history. Entering the SAC Tournament with a .436 bating average, the Dallas native not only led the conference in average, but also set MACU's single season average record while also posting the fifth-best on-base percentage (.500) and the seventh-best slugging percentage (.691) for the fourth-best OPS (1.191) in a year. His 18 doubles are the second-most by a MACU player in the NAIA Era while also being tied for the team-lead in hits (65), which also marks the seventh-most in a season. With 51 RBIs, Williams also set the sixth-most runs produced in a year.

A centerfielder that has also made an immediate impact in his first season, Gaines has electrified the MACU offense and defense with his speed and power bat. On-top of holding MACU's fourth-best batting average (.364), the San Pablo, California native leads both the team and the conference in runs scored (63), needing just three more to tie the program's single-season record. Gaines has been a powerful bat in MACU's lineup as well, posting the third-best slugging percentage (.667) and OPS (1.137) while slugging the second-most doubles (15), the most triples (4) and the second-most homers (9). Gaines has also drawn a team-high 30 walks, the sixth-most in the conference to go with 39 RBIs.

Rounding out the First Team honorees, Stark has been a huge addition to the Evangels both offensively and defensively in the catcher position. A native of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, Stark has been a great producer batting out of MACU's nine-hole, slashing .337 (33-for-98) with eight doubles and 24 RBIs while coming up with several clutch hits over the course of the season.

However, where Stark has excelled the most has been with his defense as the junior stopper owns an astounding .996 fielding percentage while committing only one error in 272 chances with 248 putouts and 23 assists. Stark has not been shy about gunning down baserunners trying to steal as he has 10 caught stealing throw-outs while baserunners are only stealing successfully at a 58.3 percent rate against him.

In his fourth season with the Evangels, Brown has put together a remarkable career while taking over the closer's role during his senior campaign. The Blanchard, Oklahoma product from the pen this season has amassed the third-most saves (6) in a season at MACU while also owning a 3-1 record in 17 appearances. The senior righty is putting together by far and away one of his best seasons at MACU as his 2.03 ERA is the second-lowest on the team.

Over his four-year stint, Brown is another pitcher who has cemented several spots in MACU's career record book, including holding the team's games started record (36) and owning marks in games pitched (58, 2nd), innings pitched (195.2), strikeouts (179, 3rd), wins (14, 3rd), saves (6, 3rd) and WHIP (1.48, 7th).

For the second year in a row, Medina earned All-SAC Second Team honors while posting a .327 batting average (55-for-168) with nine doubles and five homers for 34 RBIs and 23 runs. However, the Apple Valley, California native has been just as valuable in the field as well as from the plate as he has recorded the ninth-most assists in a season (103) and turned the sixth-most double plays (19) while continuously making web gem plays at the shortstop position.

Over his two-year MACU career, the junior infielder is also making marks in the hitting and fielding record books already as he currently holds top 10 marks in doubles (26, 4th), hits (113, 8th), total bases (169, 9th), at-bats (338, 9th), batting average (.334, 10th) and RBIs (66, 10th). Rounding out the All-SAC honorees, Police perhaps put together one of the most improved seasons for any player in the conference. After batting .243 (25-for-103) with six doubles and a homer for 19 RBIs and 33 runs in 50 games in 2023, the Prescott, Arizona native's numbers have skyrocketed in 2024.
