OKLAHOMA CITY – Coming off one of its best seasons in recent history, the Mid-America Christian men's basketball program is proud to announce that Dominick Ford has been elevated to the lead assistant coach role heading into the 2024-25 season.
Ford moves into the role after nearly a decade at MACU as both a player and a coach as he competed with the Evangels from 2016-21 before joining the staff as an assistant coach and JV head coach.
"I'm extremely excited and thankful to be moving into this position," Ford stated. "I came to MACU nine years ago and it's become my home. Coach (Josh) Gamblin and all the other coaches I've played for and worked with in the past years have helped me tremendously to grow into the man I am today. I look forward to continuing to give my all to this program and this university."
After a stellar career at McKinney North High School, Ford was recruited by head coach Josh Gamblin to compete for the Evangels prior to the start of the 2016-17 season after MACU captured its first ever NAIA National Championship.
Over the course of his five-year MACU men's basketball career, Ford left a lasting impact in the program's NAIA Era (2007-present) record book as he set the single-season record in 2019-20 for three-point shooting percentage (49.0) as well as notched spots in the career record book in rebounds (455, 6th) and three-point percentage (36.3, 7th).
Overall, Ford played a strong leadership role that saw MACU qualify for three consecutive NAIA Tournaments between 2019-21 while helping guide the Evangels to their second Sooner Athletic Conference Championship after the squad finished the COVID-19 abrupted season with a 30-2 overall record, going 19-1 in league play and earning the program's first No. 1 seed in the NAIA Tournament before the event was canceled amidst the pandemic.
Following the 2020-21 campaign, Ford stayed on with the team after graduation to serve as a part-time assistant coach while also serving as a head coach for the JV team, a role that he has filled over the past three seasons.
"Dom has been a pillar of the MACU men's basketball program for nearly a decade now," commented Gamblin. "He is the definition of an Evangel and I couldn't be more thankful to have him in the assistant spot. He will continue to help our young men grow spiritually, academically and athletically."
After going 20-13 in 2021-22 and an 11-17 season during 2022-23, the Evangels put together a resurgent season last year as the Evangels went 24-9 while finish second in the highly-competitive SAC, ending the regular season with a 17-5 league mark.
Finishing as a SAC Tournament finalist after defeating Texas Wesleyan 79-56 in the quarterfinal and John Brown 78-62 in the semifinal, the Evangels gave No. 2 and NAIA National Runner-Up Langston one of its toughest tests of the season in the SAC title game before eventually falling 55-44.
Qualifying for its seventh NAIA Tournament in the last 10 seasons, the Evangels came up with a thrilling 68-67 victory over Hastings in the First Round before eventually falling to No. 4 Oklahoma Wesleyan in the Second Round.
MACU is set to open its 2024-25 campaign on Thursday, Oct. 24 as the Evangels will host Kansas Christian inside the Gaulke Activity Center.
