No. 18 Women’s Basketball Welcomes No. 12 Wayland Baptist for Oklahoma Ford Dealers SAC Game of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 18 MACU Women's Basketball team will wrap-up the first half of Sooner Athletic Conference play with a high-profile contest on Saturday afternoon as the Evangels welcome in No. 12 Wayland Baptist for a 2 p.m. tip-off inside the Gaulke Activity Center for the Oklahoma Ford Dealers SAC Game of the Week.

The Evangels will also be hosting the Teams of Tomorrow for their annual performance at halftime of both the women's and men's games.

SEASON REPORT
  • Record: 14-1 (10-1 SAC)
  • Last Game: Won vs. Oklahoma Panhandle State – 81-43 – Jan. 9, 2025 – Gaulke Activity Center
  • Stat Leaders:
  • Team Notes:
    • Mid-America Christian is coming off yet another dominant performance against Oklahoma Panhandle State at home on Thursday night as the Evangels cruised to a 64-28 lead through three quarters of play before eventually closing out the 81-43 result.
    • The Evangels were particularly ferocious on the defensive end as MACU held OPSU to just 30.6 percent shooting from the field and the Evangels recorded steals on 16 of the 22 turnovers they forced. Kylee Scheer and Talayah Thomas were particularly effective on the defensive end as the backcourt duo combined for nine thefts in the win.
    • Scheer particularly stuffed the stat column in the win as she narrowly missed a double-double in the win, posting a game-high in points (16), rebounds (9) and steals (5) to go with three assists. Thomas also amassed an outstanding floor game with eight points and six boards to go with a career-high six steals all the while not turning the ball over even once to go with her four thefts.
    • The Evangels will be looking to continue getting a spark from junior guard Hailey Tunnell off the bench as she pitched in 14 points in the win over OPSU, all of which came in the first half as she was 5-of-7 from the field and 4-for-6 from three-point range through the first 20 minutes of the contest.
SCOUTING REPORT
Wayland Baptist (Texas)

  • Last Game vs MACU: MACU won 69-62 – Jan. 25, 2024 – Gaulke Activity Center
  • Series Streak: MACU won 1
  • Players to Watch:
    • Megan Nestor – JR – F
      • 291 Points (19.4 ppg), 114-182 FG (62.6%), 63-97 FT (64.9%), 190 Reb (12.7 rpg), 30 Steals (2.0 spg), 10 Blocks (0.7 bpg)
    • Kaitlyn Jerden – GR – F
      • 225 Points (15.0 ppg), 89-193 FG (46.1%), 20-53 3FG (37.7%), 27-32 FT (84.4%), 68 Reb (4.5 rpg), 39 Assists (2.6 apg), 29 Steals (1.9 spg), 11 Blocks (0.7 bpg)
    • Linda Brice – SR – G
      • 144 Points (9.6 ppg), 47-138 FG (34.1%), 42-64 FT (65.6%), 69 Reb (4.6 rpg), 35 Assists (2.3 apg), 18 Steals (1.2 spg)
  • Team Notes:
    • Much like the Evangels, Wayland Baptist is also coming off a lopsided win against Oklahoma Panhandle State as the Flying Queens were last in-action on Monday, taking down the Aggies by a score of 90-56 inside Anchor D Arena.
    • Saturday's matchup will feature the top two scoring offenses in the SAC as WBU enters the game as the league's best at 85.9 ppg while the Evangels sit in second with a 75.9 ppg clip. The Flying Queens are shooting a league-best 44.5 percent from the field and 34.0 percent from the three-point arc. The matchup also features two of the best rebounding teams in the SAC as MACU holds a league-best plus-14 rebounding margin with the Flying Queens in third at plus-11.3.
    • A crucial reason for Wayland's offensive success has been the play of junior forward Megan Nestor. One of the league's tallest players at 6-4, the centerpiece for WBU is scoring a SAC-best 19.4 ppg on the league's best field goal percentage (62.6) while also averaging a double-double by pulling down the second-most rebounds per game at 12.7.
    • While the NAIA powerhouse Wayland Baptist women's basketball program leads the all-time series, the two squads have split the season series down the middle the last three years with each team winning their respective home games. In their last meeting inside the Gaulke Activity Center, Mid-America Christian put together a strong defensive effort to come away with the 69-62 victory over the Flying Queens on Jan. 25. In that win, Shy Christopher tallied a game-high 22 points to go with four assists while Jaci Calavan pitched in 18 points and six boards.
