No. 18 Women’s Basketball Opens Second Half of SAC Play at UNT Dallas

OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 18 MACU Women's Basketball team will officially get the second half of Sooner Athletic Conference play underway tonight as the Evangels head down to Dallas to take on UNT Dallas for a 6 p.m. tip-off inside the Ellis Davis Fieldhouse.

SEASON REPORT
  • Record: 14-2 (10-2 SAC)
  • Last Game: Lost vs. No. 12 Wayland Baptist (Texas) – 83-81 – Jan. 11, 2024 – Gaulke Activity Center
  • Stat Leaders:
  • Team Notes:
    • Despite putting together one of its best first halves of SAC play in program history, Mid-America Christian suffered a tough result to No. 12 Wayland Baptist inside the Gaulke Activity Center on Saturday. After trailing by 12 points with just under seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, Flying Queens rallied back by outscoring MACU 19-5 over the final 6:43 to hand the Evangels a bitter 83-81 defeat.
    • Even though it was a bitter outcome for the Evangels, senior guard Kylee Scheer put together a performance for the ages in the defeat. Not only did Scheer score 17 points and dished out seven assists to just two turnovers, she also tied MACU's NAIA Era (2007-present) single game rebounding record as her 20 boards matched D'Shala Powell (Culberson) mark set in a 98-90 double overtime win over John Brown inside the Gaulke on Jan. 16, 2015.
    • It was also a bounce-back performance for senior guard Mary Nyakundi. After netting just four points in the win against OPSU last Thursday, the Wylie, Texas native led MACU's offensive efforts by tying her career-high 22 points on a highly efficient 7-for-11 (63.6 percent) shooting while going 3-of-4 (75 percent) from three and 5-for-6 (83.3 percent) from the charity stripe.
    • Even though MACU was able to hold Wayland Baptist to slightly below its season scoring average (85.7 ppg), the Evangels will be looking to try and lock back down on the defensive end. The 83 points allowed in the loss was the second most the Evangels had allowed in a game this season while the 11 turnovers forced were the fourth fewest for the MACU defense this year.

  • Team Notes:
    • Even though UNT Dallas was able to open its 2025 slate with a huge home win over Southwestern Christian back on Jan. 4, the Trailblazers have hit a tough three-game stretch by coming up empty in the next three. However, if there was a silver lining, UNTD put together a gritty road showing at John Brown on Saturday as the Trailblazers had three opportunities to tie or take the lead in the final 16 seconds, but UNTD was unable to get any of their shots to drop in the tough 56-54 defeat.
    • The Trailblazers have been very challenged on both the offensive and defensive ends against SAC competition as UNTD ranks just eighth in scoring offense (61.9 ppg) while shooting the third-lowest field goal percentage (35.2) and second-lowest three-point percentage (26.1). Defensively, UNT Dallas is giving up the third-most points (71.1 ppg), but have been a solid perimeter defense, holding league foes to the second-lowest three-point percentage (26.0) and also implement a high pressure defense that is forcing the most turnovers per game (20.8).
    • A bulk of the UNTD offense has run through the senior guard duo of Skye Dugan and Eryka Patton. Dugan is an effective attacking guard and is one of the team's best three-point shooters while both making and attempting the most free throws on the squad to average 15.9 ppg. Meanwhile, Patton has been able to utilize her 5-10 frame to nearly averaging a double-double as she is averaging 15.7 ppg and is nearly getting a double-double per game with 9.2 boards per contest.
    • Since becoming SAC foes in 2022, Mid-America Christian will be seeking its eighth-straight win against the Trailblazers. The two squads opened SAC play against each other back on Nov. 14 and after dominating the first three quarters to the tune of a 65-38 lead, the Evangels held on for a comfortable win with the reserves playing the fourth in a 74-52 victory. Syncere Harrod played a massive role off the MACU bench in the win, tallying a season-high 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting while going 9-for-12 from the free throw line to go with six boards and a pair of blocked shots.
