Women’s Basketball Glides Past Golden Eagles 63-53 in Defensive Battle

SILOAM SPRINGS, ARK. – MACU Women's Basketball dominated from the opening tip to defeat John Brown 63-53 on the road on Thursday night in Siloam Springs, Ark.

TOP PERFORMERS GAME SUMMARY
  • First Quarter
    • After a turnover on MACU's opening offensive possession, the Evangels responded with points on the next four possessions. Taliah Lee scored a pair in the paint, followed by free throws from Monique Carter, and finished off by a triple from Talayah Thomas for an early 9-6 lead, four minutes in.
    • John Brown drew within one with a three-pointer with 2:30 left, but Mia Smith and Carter closed out the opening quarter with consecutive mid-range jumpers to give MACU a 17-14 advantage.
  • Second Quarter
    • Sincere Roberts scored the first points of the second quarter three minutes in after a slow offensive start for both teams. The Golden Eagles' leading scorer and the reigning NAIA Offensive Player of the Week, Sarah Snodgrass, ended the drought for JBU. However, the Evangels held the Golden Eagles scoreless for the next five minutes.
    • During the run, Caitlynn Jordan scored consecutive buckets in the paint and Smith added two more from the line as MACU led 25-16 with 2:30 remaining.
    • The Evangels went on a quick five-point spurt to close the half with a second triple from Thomas, and an elite post spin move inside for two from Lee. MACU took a 32-19 lead into the halftime intermission.
  • Third Quarter
    • Mid-America Christian explode out of halftime with seven quick points in three minutes to force a timeout from John Brown. The MACU points coming in the paint from Roberts, Smith, and Jordan to extend a 39-22 lead.
    • John Brown scored on consecutive possessions from an and-one from Snodgrass and a layup from Caelyn Ferguson in efforts to change the momentum. However, the Evangels snatched it right back as Lee laid one in for the first double-digit scorer, then cashed in for three as the Evangels lead was 44-26, with 4:45 remaining in the quarter.
    • The Golden Eagles continued to show some fight on the offensive end scoring on back-to-back possessions, but it was once again Thomas who found the bottom from behind the arc as time expired to stretch the Evangels lead to 51-35 after three.
  • Fourth Quarter
    • The Golden Eagles found some shooting from behind the arc to start the fourth quarter to cut into the Evangel lead. However, MACU continued to dominate inside the paint earning points from the free throw line to lead 57-41 at the media timeout.
    • The Evangels ran two perfect sets for easy buckets on their final two offensive possessions as the first one came from Jordan, followed by Lee, both assisted by Smith for her sixth and seventh assists of the night to close out a 63-53 wire-to-wire victory.
GAME NOTES
  • MACU finished 27-62 (43.5%) from the field, a season low in three-point attempts at 4-12 (33.3%) and 5-6 (83.3%) from the free throw line. The Golden Eagles shot 35.1% from the field at 20-57, well below their season average in 3pt percentage at 23.3%, 7-30, and 6-9 (66.7%) from the free throw line.  
  • Taliah Lee led the Evangels in scoring with 15 points off 7-of-12 from the field. Talayah Thomas and Mia Smith joined the double-digit scoring mark with 13 apiece as Thomas splashed in 3-of-4 threes, and Smith finished 5-8 from the field and 3-4 from the charity stripe.
  • Sincere Roberts snatched a team-high 10 rebounds, while Taliah Lee and Aniya Smith both grabbed six apiece. Mia Smith dished out seven assists, recording 17 assists in two games.
  • The Evangels won the turnover margin by committing just 11 to the Golden Eagles 16 turnovers.
  • MACU dominated the points in the paint with a 43-28 margin over JBU.
  • Mid-America Christian won its 10th and improved to 5-0 in conference play. After Science & Arts Thursday night loss to College of the Ozarks, the Evangels remain the lone undefeated team top of the Sooner Athletic Conference table.   
  • MACU closes the all-time record gap to 20-21 against John Brown, winning three consecutive over the Golden Eagles.
