VICTORIA, Texas – No. 13 MACU baseball dropped both in the doubleheader to No. 14 Central Methodist on Riverside Baseball Field in Victoria, Texas Saturday afternoon.

GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian allowed 10 runs on 12 hits while picking up five hits of their own for three runs. CMU scored nine of its 10 runs in the first three innings, a hole that was too deep for MACU to climb out of.
  • Central Methodist got on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, after Evangels starting pitcher Fabian Hernandez allowed the first three Eagles to reach base, he got a 6-4-3 double play which allowed Valentin Cerna Jr. to score. With two outs and a runner on third, Ryan Malzahn singled home Kyle Williams to extend the CMU lead to 2-0.
  • The Evangels got those runs back in the top of the second, Jonluke Hobdy led off the inning with a one-hopper off the left-center field wall and later scored on a D'Andre Gaines comebacker that Eagles starter Cesar Morales was unable to come up with. With a 2-1 score Payton Matthews flew out to center for the sacrifice fly that scored Giordany Mendoza.
  • In the bottom of the second the Eagles pushed five across on six hits to retake the lead with a 7-2 score.
  • MACU pushed one across in the top of the third with a two-out RBI single on a line drive up the middle by Mendoza to score Cristopher Munoz cutting the Eagles lead to 7-3.
  • The Eagles responded by tagging on two more in the bottom of the third with a two-out single by Williams that scored a pair to extend the CMU lead to 9-3. The Eagles threatened to add on more with first and third and two-outs, but Fabian Hernandez picked off the pinch runner Darius Freeman at first base to escape the jam.
  • The Evangels threatened in the top of the fifth, loading the bases on three errors committed by CMU, but reliever Justin Stedry got Gaines to groundout to short to end the inning.
  • CMU pushed another run across in the bottom of the fifth on four walks by the Evangels staff to extend the lead to 10-3.
  • MACU was unable to get anything going the rest of the way, as the Eagles pulled away with a 10-3 win.
  • JonLuke Hobdy had the only extra base-hit of the contest for MACU, he finished 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
  • Giordany Mendoza finished 1-for-3 with a run, RBI and a walk.
  • Cristopher Munoz and Payton Matthews both reached base twice, Munoz on a single and a walk, Matthews walked twice and added on a sacrifice fly for an RBI.
  • MACU was able to generate a decent amount of baserunners with only five hits, reaching base on five walks and five errors committed by CMU, but they struggled to score the runners finishing the game with 12 left on base.

GAME NOTES
  • Central Methodist strung together 17 hits leading to 14 runs while holding Mid-America Christian to six runs on ten hits.
  • CMU came out the gates hot, scoring six behind six hits in the top of the first to take an early 6-0 lead.
  • Starting pitcher for the Evangels Angel Miranda bounced back with a shutdown inning in the second, allowing the offense to get back in it with a single by Brett Justice, followed by a walk to Jonluke Hobdy and a three-run bomb over the right field wall by Giordany Mendoza to cut the CMU lead to 6-3. With nobody on and one-away, Carlos Medina singled to left and D'Andre Gaines scored him on a moonshot to left for the second homer of the inning for MACU making it a 6-5 game.
  • Miranda put up another shutdown inning following the five-run surge with a 1-2-3 third to keep the momentum on the Evangels side.
  • MACU put on a couple of baserunners in the bottom of the third on a Justice double and infield single from Hobdy, but Eagles starter Marcos Lopez retired Mendoza and Medina on a pair of fly outs to hold the Eagles 6-5 advantage.
  • In the top of the fourth Miranda stranded an Eagles runner in scoring position by getting Kyle Williams to groundout to first on the 3-1 putout to keep the score remaining at 6-5 CMU.
  • After Gaines was plunked, Noel McGarry-Doyle picked up his third hit of the contest on a single to right field that advanced Gaines to third, who later scored on a wild pitch by Eagles reliever Landon Winingham to tie it up at 6-6 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • It was another scoreless frame for Miranda in the top of the fifth, he once again left an Eagles runner in scoring position by getting Carlos Negron to groundout to second to end the inning.
  • The Eagles led off the sixth with a drag bunt single by Darius Freeman, Miranda attempted to make a pop-up slide throw but the throw sailed up the line allowing Freeman to take second and later advance on a sacrifice bunt by Dominick Proctor. A groundout to third by Gavin Whitehurs scored Freeman to give CMU the 7-6 lead. With nobody on and two outs the Eagles struck up a rally, reaching base safely in six consecutive at bats on five hits and a walk, leading to four runs being pushed across giving CMU an 11-6 lead.
  • CMU added three more in the seventh on a pair of homers to extend the lead to 14-6 where things would ultimately hold up to give the Eagles the win.
  • Giordany Mendoza wrapped up his solid day with a 2-for-3 game with a three-run homer for his first big fly of the season.
  • Noel McGarry-Doyle became the first Evangel to have three or more hits in a game this season, his third hit of the contest was a notable one, it moved him into second place all-time in the MACU record books. His 143 career hits surpassed Felix Martinez's 142 from 2018-2020.
  • D'Andre Gaines hit his team leading third homer of the season, he also recorded a hit for the seventh time in eight tries this year.
  • Brett Justice had another multi-hit game, he went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
UP NEXT
  • MACU returns home to Oklahoma City with the home opener of the 2025 campaign taking place Tuesday Feb. 4, with a first pitch slated for 6 p.m. against Randall.
