Softball Pitches Past Central Christian to Complete Series Sweep

MCPHERSON, Kan. – The MACU Softball pitching staff was on-point in its midweek road trip to Central Christian on Tuesday night as the Evangels cruised to a pair of 4-1, 5-0 victories over Tigers to complete the series sweep.

GAME ONE
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 4, Central Christian 1
    • Mid-America Christian (17-14, 13-8 SAC)
    • Central Christian (7-28, 3-22 SAC)
PITCHING DECISIONS TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME SUMMARY
  • Central Christian managed to get into the scoring column first as an Ashley Vaccaro leadoff walk and steal of second allowed the speedy outfielder to score on Paige Major's RBI single to center, making it a 1-0 ballgame.
  • The Tigers threatened once again in the bottom of the second as another leadoff walk drawn by Jaci Jeffers and a two-out single to right by Miranda Tegtmeier allowed a pair to reach before both advanced on a wild pitch on the first offering to Vaccaro. However, MACU starting pitcher Chana Wolfe got out of the jam by getting Vaccaro to pop out into foul territory to Thurman at first.
  • After struggling to find baserunners through the first two innings, Mid-America Christian was able to break through in the third as Stormy Haynes led off the frame by drawing a walk, stealing second, and advancing to third on a groundout before scoring on Hallie Wilson's RBI single to short.
  • Emylee Campbell put MACU in-front moments later by dropping a bloop single into left-center to plate the speedy Wilson, making it a 2-1 game.
  • The Evangels added to it in the top of the fifth. With the Evangels getting runners to second and third following Hallie Wilson's leadoff single and a Serena Rodriguez walk with both nabbing a base, Madisson Chavez dropped a two-RBI single into left to stretch the edge to 4-1.
  • MACU narrowly missed adding a third when Makenzie Thurman hammered a double into left-center, but unfortunately, Chavez needed to hold up on the flyball and was thrown out trying to score.
  • Central Christian put up one of their biggest threats since the first in the bottom of the fifth as Tegtmeier and Vaccaro slapped one-out singles to put runners at first and second. However, MACU reliever Gia Reynosa shut the door on the threat by notching a strikeout and a fielder's choice groundout to short to keep the 4-1 lead intact.
  • The Tigers never threatened the rest of the way as the Evangels secured the series with the 4-1 win.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its four runs on nine hits and committed one error while Central Christian notched its only run on four hits and made one miscue.
  • After MACU starter Chana Wolfe battled through two tough innings where the Tigers put pressure on, Gia Reynosa entered in relief in the third and shut down Central Christian, holding CCCK to just two hits with no walks while striking out five over five innings of work to get the win.
  • On a day where the Evangels struggled to get the bats going, Hallie Wilson and Stormy Haynes led the offensive charge with a pair of hits apiece. Wilson finished the day slashing 2-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored to go with a stolen base while Haynes batted 2-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and a steal.
  • Madisson Chavez was the team's biggest run producer with two of MACU's four RBIs, finishing 1-for-4 while Emylee Campbell tallied the other with a 1-for-3 day and a walk drawn.
  • It was a tough day for both teams to drive the ball as Makenzie Thurman and Serena Rodriguez were the only two players to come up with an extra base hit with each tallying a double.
  • With the victory, Mid-America Christian has now won the season series in every year since 2008, including when Central Christian joined the SAC in 2014.
GAME TWO

    • Mid-America Christian (18-14, 14-8 SAC)
    • Central Christian (7-29, 3-23 SAC)

  • Loss: Chelsie Hirtler (1-8)
TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME SUMMARY
  • Mid-America Christian threatened to put up a crooked inning as Kisbel Vizcaya started off the frame with a swinging bunt single to first, but was caught on the first pitch to Hallie Wilson trying to steal second. However, the Evangels immediately responded as Wilson slapped a single into right. Emylee Campbell replaced her on the basepaths by grounding into a fielder's choice and after getting down to second on a wild pitch, Serena Rodriguez lined an RBI single to center to make it a 1-0 ballgame.
  • In the top of the third, the Evangels took advantage of some major defensive and pitching miscues as Hallie Wilson legged out a throw to first off bobbled grounder to second before stealing second and eventually scoring on Campbell's RBI knock to left. After Rodriguez smacked a single to left and got down to second on the throw trying to nab Campbell at third, MACU took advantage of a pair of mistakes during Brooklyn Wilson's at-bat as Campbell scored on a passed ball and Rodriguez came across on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
  • The Evangels put together a major threat in the top of the fourth when Stormy Haynes drew a walk to lead it off and Vizcaya slapped a single to center before both runners sprinted down a base on Hallie Wilson's deep flyball to right. However, MACU came up empty when interference was called on Campbell's infield single to short before Rodriguez popped out to short to keep the Evangels off the board.
  • However, MACU was able to once again take advantage of a defensive miscue by the Tigers. After Kayten Herman drew a one-out, pinch-hit walk, Brooklyn Wilson on the re-enter got down to second on a groundout to third before a bobbled grounder by the second baseman during Heidi Noisey's at-bat allowed Wilson to score on the play, wrapping up the scoring at 5-0.
  • Central Christian was unable to muster any sort of threat against Isabel Ray in the circle as the Evangels closed out a dominant 5-0 win.
GAME NOTES
  • The Evangels scored their five runs on 10 hits and made one miscue while the Tigers finished with four hits and committed three errors.
  • After having an incredibly rare 0-for-4 game at the plate in game one, MACU's top hitter Kisbel Vizcaya bounced back in a big way as she finished 3-for-4 from the dish to go with a stolen base.
  • Emylee Campbell continued to wreak havoc from the plate and on the basepath as the third baseman finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored two of MACU's five runs.
  • Serena Rodriguez continued to build upon her already impressive on-base percentage as the freshman left fielder slashed 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run as well as a walk. With her 22nd base-on-balls, the Palmdale, California product has already moved into seventh on MACU's single season walks list with 14 games left in the regular season on-top of postseason play.
  • In just her seventh appearance and sixth start, Isabel Ray continues to shine in the circle as the senior tossed her fourth complete game and her second complete game shutout by allowing just four singles with a walk and four strikeouts.
  • By completing the sweep, it marks the sixth time since Central Christian joined the SAC that the Evangels took every game in the regular season series.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will have a short turnaround as it will return home for its Senior Weekend four-game series against Wayland Baptist. The Evangels will open the series against the Pioneers on Thursday night with the first game of the twin bill slated for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
